Zipbob Praises Dorm-Surfing
With this summer being as hot as it has been, I’m sure everyone has had more than a couple of times where they wanted to just pack up and leave. Though I love going on unplanned holidays myself, finding accommodation is always a pain. Finding a place to stay for a girl travelling alone is particularly hard, and another girl with the same problem began the task of making accommodation opportunities at university dormitories. Of course for university dormitories to be used as accommodation, this requires complicated agreements between various parties. I want to praise Dorm-Surfing for taking on the challenge and getting the business up and running after solving the early problems while preparing the company.
What is Dorm-Surfing?
Dorm + Surfing = Finding accommodation at university dormitories around the country.
Dorm-Surfing is a service young travelers can use to find rooms at university dormitories during the vacation period. One of the important things about this service is that rooms are not like hotels or motels and the atmosphere is similar to that of an overseas youth hostel where young people will talk and eat together.
Dorm-Surfing’s Two Keywords
Dormitory
Hotels are expensive, motels seem uncomfortable and saunas are uncomfortable. Why isn’t there suitable accommodation for young people in Korea?
To answer this question, we thought of the empty dormitories at universities during vacation time when students are back to their hometowns. When I traveled to England and France, dormitories were opened up and used as mini hotels. Seeing this example, I started Dorm-Surfing after thinking it would be great to benchmark the idea of open dormitories in Korea which has poor a accommodation environment.
This summer Dorm-Surfing set up its first youth accommodation venue at Jecheon’s Semyung University. There was an amazing response from our “Dorm-Surfers” after staying in the dorms which were only built two years ago and have the best facilities in the country. A dormitory experience itself is something that sounds interesting and guests were satisfied that they could comfortably use school facilities without having to worry about security.
Youth
Dorm-Surfing’s is all about “Youth”. We were concerned about the profitability of Dorm-Surfing as it was youth accommodation being run by young people themselves. Knowing that young people do not have a lot of money, to lighten the burden we made sure that setting high accommodation prices was off limits. So, to reduce operating costs we developed a student volunteer system.
We rounded up 18 supporters and made five teams who worked as hosts and ran the accommodation for three nights each. Every night at 9pm, all the travelers would come together for an event which the hosts had prepared. Singing songs, playing games and sharing travelling experiences all night provided an opportunity for guests to make good friendships and memories. I think the reason the supporters volunteered without worrying about receiving any money was simply because of the passion to be able be involved in creating “youth culture”.
What’s next for Dorm-Surfing?
Dorm-Surfing finished its two week long accommodation from July 22 to August 5 successfully. Having finished one the path ahead is long. Nevertheless, during those two weeks Dorm-Surfing showed potential. As a business, Dorm-Surfing there are limits and difficulties such as profitability and seasonality, but the ability for Dorm-Surfing to nurture and continue is shows that it will last. I saw the future of Dorm-Surfing through the comments of supporters who said it was a turning point in their life, the guests who were thankful for the lifelong memories and the staff at the university who wanted to help.

여름 휴가들은 다녀오셨나요? 멋진 스타트업이라면 열심히 일한만큼 휴식도 열심히! 라이프 밸런스를 맞추는 것도 중요합니다. 특히 올해처럼 더운 여름은 당장이라도 떠나고 싶었던 순간이 두번이 아니셨으리라 짐작해 봅니다.
바람 따라 물 따라 아무런 계획도 없이 여행 떠나기 좋아하는 저에게 숙소 마련은 항상 골치거리 인데요. 특히 혼자 여행하는 여성은 숙소 찾는 것이 만만치 않은 고민거리인데 같은 고민을 하고 있던 여성분이 이를 고민에만 머무는 것이 아니라, 실제로 대학교 기숙사를 숙소로 만드는 일에 착수했답니다. 대학교 기숙사를 숙소로 개방하는 것은 여러 이해 관계자와의 협의가 필요한 복잡한 일이죠. 문제점 제기부터 이를 치열한 고민과 준비 끝에 솔루션을 찾아내어 지금 실제로 멋지게 운영하고 있다니, 대단한 실행력의 돔서핑을 칭찬합니다.
돔서핑은? Dorm(기숙사)+Surfing(파도타기 -> 찾다) = 전국 대학교 기숙사를 숙소로 찾다!
돔서핑은 방학 중 전국의 대학교 기숙사 남는 방을 젊은이들을 위한 여행자 숙소로 개방하는 서비스입니다. 여기서 중요한 건 호텔이나 모텔처럼 벽으로 꽉 막힌 숙소가 절대 아니라 외국의 유스호스텔처럼 젊은이들이 한데 모여 여행 이야기도 하고 수박도 함께 나눠 먹을 수 있는 열린 공간, 소통이 있는 ‘숙소’라는 것입니다.
돔서핑의 핵심 Keyword 2가지
첫 번째, ‘기숙사’
호텔은 비싸! 모텔은 뭔가 꺼림칙해! 찜질방은 불편해! 우리나라에는 왜 젊은이들이 묵을 수 있는 마땅한 숙소가 없는 걸까?
이 질문에 답하기 위해 ‘대안 숙박’을 찾던 중 방학에 고향으로 가는 학생들로 인해 텅텅 비는 기숙사를 떠올리게 되었습니다. 그리고 올해 초 다녀온 영국과 프랑스에서는 관광객이 많은 방학 시즌엔 기숙사를 미니 호텔로 개방하여 활용하고 있었습니다. 이 사례를 보고 숙박환경이 열악한 우리나라에도 벤치마킹하면 좋겠다는 생각에서 기숙사 개방 사업인 돔서핑을 시작하게 되었습니다.
이번 여름에 진행된 돔서핑의 선발 타자인 청춘숙소 1호점은 제천의 세명대학교 기숙사에서 진행되었는데요. 지은 지 2년밖에 안된 우리나라에서 가장 시설 좋은 곳인 세명대 기숙사 덕분에 돔서퍼(돔서핑 유저)들의 반응이 아주 뜨거웠습니다. 말만 들어도 왠지 특별할 것 같은 ‘기숙사 체험’. 게다가 학교라는 건전한 시설에서 치안 걱정 없이 마음 편하게 이용할 수 있는 숙소라는 사실이 돔서퍼들에게 큰 만족도를 가져다 주었습니다.
두번째, ‘젊은이’
돔서핑의 주체와 객체는 모두 ‘젊은이’입니다. “젊은이들이 운영하고 젊은이들이 이용하는 청춘숙소!” 사업 구성 초기에 돔서핑의 수익성 측면을 극복하기 위해 많은 고민을 했습니다. 젊은이들의 가벼운 주머니 사정을 알고 그들의 고민을 덜어주고자 시작한 사업인 만큼 높은 숙박비 책정은 금물. 그래서 돔서핑에 들어가는 운영 유지비를 최소한으로 줄이기 위한 방편으로 ‘대학생 자원봉사’ 시스템을 도입했습니다.
전국의 대학생 서포터즈 18명을 모집하였고 4인 1조로 구성된 5개 팀이 직접 숙소 컨셉과 서비스를 기획하는 기숙사 호스트가 되어 3박 4일씩 기숙사 운영을 맡았습니다. 매일 저녁 9시부터는 여행자들 모두가 한자리에 모여 서포터즈들이 준비한 이벤트에 참여하였는데요. 방팅을 시켜주기도 하고, 단체 마피아 게임을 하기도 하고, 기타 치면서 함께 즉석으로 노래를 만들어 부르기도하고… 젊음과 여행이라는 공통점을 공유하다 보니 처음 보는 사람과도 금새 친해져서 밤새도록 즐거운 추억을 만들 수 있었답니다. 대학생 서포터즈들이 돈 한푼 받지 않고도 자원하여 운영을 할 수 있었던 것은 단순히 ‘수익’을 넘어 ‘젊은이들의 문화’를 만드는 일에 동참하고자 하는 뜨거운 열정을 함께 공유할 수 있었기 때문이라고 생각합니다.
현재 그리고 앞으로 나아가는 돔서핑의 행보?
돔서핑은 지난 7월 22일부터 8월 5일에 걸친 2주간의 청춘숙소 1호점 성공적으로 끝냈습니다. 이제 막 실험 하나를 마쳤기 때문에 갈 길이 멀지요. 하지만 그 짧고도 긴 2주 동안 돔서핑의 가능성을 보았습니다. ‘사업’으로서의 돔서핑은 수익성이나 계절성 등등 여러가지 제한과 어려움이 많지만 ‘문화’로서의 돔서핑은 앞으로 자생력과 지속력을 갖춘 ‘Super Long Lasting Culture’임에 분명합니다. ‘3박 4일의 호스트 경험이 인생의 전환점이 되었다’고 고백하는 서포터즈 친구를 통해,’ 평생 잊을 수 없는 특별한 추억을 만들어줘서 고맙다’는 돔서퍼를 통해, ‘전국적으로 활성화 될 수 있게 작지만 꼭 도움을 주고 싶다’는 세명대학교 교직원분을 통해 저는 돔서핑의 미래를 보았습니다. 앞으로 겨울방학에 진행될 청춘숙소 2호점, 다음 여름방학에 진행될 3호점, 4호점, 5호점… 100호점까지! 전국 각 지역에 돔서핑 청춘숙소가 운영되어 젊은이들이 마음놓고 편안하게 이용할 수 있는 숙소문화가 생기길 간절히 바래봅니다.
