The sum is bigger than its parts Every Korean 20 years and older remembers the legendary red devils team from 2002. This team reached the semi-final beating top world teams such as Portugal, Italy and Spain.

What made this legendary team so successful? in Korea, it seems the consensus is that an especially talented team, headed by a great coach along with home crowd pushed the ‘red devils’ to the semi finals. Outside Korea, I’ve heard many conflicting explanations: Some claim the referees allowed the Korean team to win (this is the explanations Korean hate the most). Others theorize the reason is superb training before the world cup. Another popular explanation is simply that the home court gave the Korean team the necessary advantage.

There are more than 1 Billion people watching the world cup this year, and I’m sure many of them would like to know: what is the winning component? Based on Korea’s past success, can we now isolate it? Maybe it the home-court advantage? If so, you would expect South Africa to do well when it hosted the world cup – but it didn’t make it past the initial groups stage. When the United States hosted, it lost at the first knock-out round. In fact, even Japan, who co-hosted with Korea, did not make it past the top-16 stage. If not home court advantage, was is the foreign coach? Doesn’t seem so.

Korea tried foreign coaches for most of the subsequent world-cup tournaments but never achieved similar success. Is it the legendary team, then? Or the supporting crowd? Personally, I certainly hope not. Because if it’s one of those, the Korean football future looks grim: a legendary team is hard to come by, and there are no plans to host the world cup in Korea in the near future. Should Korea just quietly resign from future games to avoid embarrassment?

The reality is, it was not just one factor. It was a mix of factors which, unlike a baking recipe, we don’t know the exact quantities and can only guess the ingredients. Moreover, factors that made a team successful in 2002, may not work in 2014. A clear example would be the Spanish team, winners of the European cup in 2008, the world cup in 2010 and the European cup again in 2012, this Spanish was praised by commentators as one of the greatest to ever play the game. But in the current world cup, this same team has been badly beaten, and the same commentators are now saying the days of this team are behind it. This is all common sense. We all understand that a football team is good for many different reasons – you can’t just take one quality and duplicate the success.

But if that’s so obvious, why do we make this mistake with startups? Investors, myself included, are the worst offenders: we look for patterns in trying to evaluate if a company will be successful. We all look for the next Mark Zukerberg or Steve Jobs, the next Google or Twitter and we do it by seeing if it has certain qualities the other winning “teams” have. But obviously it’s not one or two qualities – in fact, it’s the sum of all qualities – the good and bad – that makes a team a success, whether it’s a football team or a startup. Along with timing (or luck), this mix of qualities is what makes startups a success. I often tell startups not to emulate other successful startups, but it’s hard not to try and learn from successes of others and try to figure out some kind of winning formula.

Just like it’s hard for investors like me not to look for patterns in companies when deciding whether to invest in them. But when looking at other successful companies, remember to try and look at the many different parts; it’s not one quality or one aspect that makes your favorite company a success – it’s a large mix, some of them are qualities that would be considered bad on their own – and this sum of different qualities is what makes the company what it is, and brings it success.
