On inspiration and execution Are you one of those people who love reading and posting inspirational quotes on Facebook?

Maybe you have favorite inspirational quotes in your office, hung on the wall? If that’s the case, let me please remind you of Thomas Edison’s famous quote: “Genius is 1% inspiration, and 99% perspiration”. Are you sweating 99 times more than being inspired? If not, you have a problem. Many people think that inspirational quotes gives them motivation. But in fact, in most cases inspirational quotes are like buying stuff from the home shopping network, or maybe more like eating a donut when you`re really hungry.

It sends happy signals to your brain: “hey, I just bought something really useful at a great price! Wow, this delicious food is going to totally be instead of lunch!” but in reality its effect wears off almost immediately and the long term effect is zero or negative. Inspirational quotes are not bad, but the effect they have is bad.

The elevated mood they put you in is often a reason not to do the small, unimportant work you were planning to do. But it’s in fact this small work (the ‘perspiration’) that will lead to success. You may think you are ‘looking at the big picture’ or strategizing, but in fact you are delaying the actual tasks that will move you forward, or you spend time debating strategy instead of implementing tactics.

Your brain is ‘high’ because it is seemingly satisfied by the deep, intelligent phrases that will never actually be implemented. This is like when we’re so proud of ourselves for buying a gym membership we’ll never actually use. There’s an additional risk; surrounding ourselves with profound phrases by admirable people, is like stuffing your body with donuts instead of food.

Soon, your body will crave only empty sugar, and your work will seem boring: who wants to prepare another uninspired email campaign or visit a store to try and sell your product (and possibly get rejected for the 50th time)? Instead, you want to stand on the podium like Steve Jobs and announce something so amazing the world will stop breathing for a minute. Or in Jobs’ words: you want to ‘make a dent in the universe’. But making a dent in the universe is not a strategy, it’s a goal.

The strategy is something practical, and that translates into something tactical, and will make you perspire. But without that sweat, you’ll accomplish nothing, and the polished inspirational quote from a zen master is the opposite of that sweat. There’s nothing more irritating than a “smart ass” trying to be philosophical in the middle of a 10 Kilometer run, when everyone is on the verge of exhaustion.

What is the alternative to being inspired? Here is what often motivates the most (warning: you are not likely to read about these on autobiographies of any accomplished entrepreneurs): competitiveness, anger, fear. All these negative feelings are what usually pushes people to the extreme. We don’t need a PhD in psychology to understand Steve Jobs suffered from being an adopted child and that this pushed him to prove himself to the world. Envy is a sin by the catholic church, but it makes the technology world go round: Larry Ellison, founder and CEO of Oracle, was so envious at Bill Gates being the richest man in the world, he convinced his board of directors to give him just $1 as annual salary.

Instead, his compensation was Oracle stock options, which drove him to take the Oracle stock up to the stratosphere. He was extremely successful, and this was beneficial to the stock holders, and also to himself: Larry Ellison actually passed Bill Gates and took the number one spot for a short while in 2000.
Look how far envy can take you! I don’t mean to say fear, envy, anger and other negative feelings should be cultivated. But we all know they are there, and we know they push us forward. Some people admit it more than others, but in many cases those negative feelings are behind our greatest successes. What isn’t? Motivational posters and quotes.
