Your comfort zone
How is your day going so far? Nice and comfortable? That’s not very good.

What have you done today that was uncomfortable but important? Doing things outside of your comfort zone is one of the unique weapons a startup has. You should be using that more often.

Startups try to change the existing order; after all, Google, Apple or Amazon can probably do whatever it is your startup is working on. These companies aren’t doing it either because they don’t want to change the way the world works (they are quite happy with the current way of things) or it’s hard for them to do it.

But why would it be hard for them to do it? They can put more people than you can on a project. They can outspend you in marketing, sales, development or design. The main reason something is hard for one of the big companies is because it’s uncomfortable for them to do.

Google is very interested in making revenue from the travel industry – but you won’t see Google convincing people to share their apartments with strangers; a startup like Airbnb can do it, however, and reap the benefits.

Likewise, if Apple tried to launch a ride-sharing service, the complaints from passengers that Uber is receiving today would have embarrassed Tim Cook and his team. Who wants to be mentioned in a news story that details how a passenger was hurt by someone giving them a ride? Certainly not a company that is one of the largest and most reputable in the world. But Uber is fine with it – they have very little to lose and a lot to gain.

So doing uncomfortable things is part of the startup DNA. But not all uncomfortable things are that big and strategic – when reddit started, they had to fake reader profiles and the founders conducted discussions among themselves making it look as if they have a large community. Shameful, isn’t it? Maybe. But who cares now? Reddit is one of the biggest sites on the Internet – I would say it was worth it.

Getting out of your comfort zone is hard; no one wants to do something uncomfortable (we wouldn’t be calling it ‘uncomfortable’ otherwise). However, it’s also a little bit like a muscle – you can train yourself to more easily get out of the comfort zone or try unusual approaches. Just like creativity; doing creative things can easily develop your creativity.

In a similar way, getting out of your comfort zone often helps make it a bit easier. Of course, Israelis do it much more often, and we usually call that “Hutzpah”. But you aren’t born with this quality, you can develop it.

I hate getting out of my comfort zone myself, and I have to remind myself to do it – you should remind yourself too. Also, a lot like exercise, you may be able to find ‘getting out of the comfort zone’ exercises that are a bit more fun.

I have a regular coffee shop in Seoul where I make outrageous requests and receive in return weird looks from the sellers; it’s a good exercise because it reminds me that a weird look from someone is the worse case scenario for most uncomfortable situation. It also gives me the strength to get out of my comfort zone later that day, feeling like I finished a good training session and strengthen my muscle.
Here what doesn’t happen: No one will throw you out of your comfort zone unless you initiate it.

If you are short of ideas for getting out of the comfort zone, here is one of my favorites: next time you buy a coffee, leave an extra 5,000 krw and tell the cashier you are buying coffee for the customer behind you. Make sure not to give it the customer behind you directly – you must go through the awkward ceremony of explaining the whole thing to the cashier. Now you’ve exercised a bit and made someone’s day a bit more colorful.

Remember – for almost every situation there’s always a “comfortable” way of doing things. Make sure you don’t always select that option.
