글로벌 액셀러레이터 스파크랩이 운영하는 바이오·헬스케어 분야 특화 액셀러레이터 스파크바이오(대표 이홍주)가 포항시와 함께 임상전문 특화병원 설립을 위한 업무협약을 체결했다고 22일 밝혔다.
협약식은 서울 강남구 창업보육센터 마루360에서 진행됐으며, 스파크바이오를 비롯해 포항시(시장 이강덕), 포항시의회(의장 김일만), 포항 글로벌 기업 혁신파크(대표 이재훈) 등 주요 기관이 참여했다.
이번 협약을 통해 스파크바이오는 포항시 글로벌 기업 혁신파크 내 들어서는 ‘임상전문 특화병원’ 설립 프로젝트에 공동으로 참여하고, ▲임상 연구 및 혁신 치료법 개발 ▲글로벌 임상 연구 플랫폼 등을 위한 바이오 스타트업 유치와 육성을 지원하게 됐다.
임상전문 특화병원은 총 사업비 약 1500억원 규모에 건축면적 3만8400㎡의 병원과 검강검진센터 2개동으로 조성 예정으로 최신 연구 성과와 실시간 임상 적용을 연계해 환자 맞춤형 치료를 제공하는 것은 물론, 글로벌 의료·연구 기관 및 제약사와 협력을 통해 국내 최초로 연구비 기반으로 운영되는 것이 특징이다.
스파크랩은 지난 2022년 포항시와 스타트업 클러스터 조성을 위한 업무 협약을 체결한 이후, 글로벌 바이오 클러스터 구축을 목표로 스위스 바젤의 바이오 혁신 모델을 참고해 국내 바이오 스타트업 생태계 육성을 위한 다양한 사업을 자체적으로 전개해왔다.
특히 2023년에는 바이오·헬스케어 분야 특화 엑셀러레이터 스파크바이오를 출범, 한국건강관리협회와 국내 최초 공유 실험실인 메디오픈랩을 운영하며 ▲이노제닉스 ▲진캐스트 ▲웨이센 등 우수한 기술력을 보유한 바이오 스타트업 13곳을 지원 중에 있다.
이홍주 스파크바이오 대표는 “포항시와 협력을 통해 글로벌 바이오 도시 도약을 위한 초석을 함께 다지게 돼서 뜻깊다”며 “바이오 스타트업들이 임상전문 특화병원에서 쌓은 연구 실적을 기반으로 미래 의료 혁신을 선도할 수 있도록 전방위적으로 지원하겠다”고 말했다.

SparkBio, Pohang City and Business Agreement for Establishment of 'Clinical Specialist Hospital'

The clinical specialty hospital will be built with a total project cost of approximately KRW 150 billion and a construction area of 38,400㎡, consisting of two buildings: a hospital and a health screening center. It will provide customized treatment for patients by linking the latest research results with real-time clinical applications, and it will be the first in Korea to be operated on a research grant basis through cooperation with global medical and research institutions and pharmaceutical companies.
Since signing a business agreement with Pohang City in 2022 to establish a startup cluster, SparkLabs has independently carried out various projects to foster the domestic bio startup ecosystem by referencing the bio innovation model of Basel, Switzerland, with the goal of establishing a global bio cluster.
In particular, in 2023, SparkBio, a specialized accelerator in the bio and healthcare fields, will be launched, and the company will operate Mediopen Lab, the first shared laboratory in Korea, with the Korea Health Management Association. It is currently supporting 13 bio startups with excellent technological prowess, including ▲InnoGenics ▲Genecast ▲Weysen.
