웹툰·웹소설 API 인프라 ‘보물섬’을 운영 중인 구루컴퍼니(대표 최원혁)가 문화체육관광부 산하 한국콘텐츠진흥원이 주관하는 ‘2025년 콘텐츠 스타트업 투자연계 창업도약 프로그램’에 최종 선정됐다.
이번 선정은 콘텐츠 스타트업의 글로벌 확장 가능성과 기술 경쟁력을 중점 평가한 결과로, 구루컴퍼니는 2024년 프리A 라운드를 통해 20억 원의 투자를 유치한 데 이어, 현재 시리즈A 투자 유치를 본격화하고 있다. 이번 사업 선정을 통해 최대 2억 원의 사업화 자금과 맞춤형 스케일업 프로그램을 지원받게 된다.
구루컴퍼니는 국내 주요 기업 앱에 콘텐츠를 제공 중인 웹툰·웹소설 API 인프라 ‘보물섬’을 운영하는 기술 스타트업으로, 자사의 API를 글로벌로 확장하기 위한 핵심 기술로 LLM 기반 자동 현지화 솔루션 ‘MALT’(Multi-model Automated Localization and Translation)를 개발 중이다. MALT는 GPT-4o, Claude, LaMa, YOLOv8 등 최신 AI 모델을 조합해, OCR부터 번역, 인페인팅, 식자까지 전 현지화 과정을 자동화하는 원스톱 파이프라인이다.
구루컴퍼니 김황수 CTO는 “최근 AI 기술의 급속한 발전으로 OCR이나 기계번역 품질이 비약적으로 향상됐지만, 웹툰 현지화는 여전히 파편화된 수작업 공정에 의존해 시간과 비용이 과도하게 소모되고 있다”며, “MALT가 상용화되면 전체 공정을 자동화하여 현지화 비용과 시간을 90%까지 단축할 수 있으며, 그간 국내 흥행작에 국한됐던 글로벌 유통이, ‘보물섬’을 통해 모든 K-콘텐츠로 확대될 수 있는 환경을 만들 수 있다”고 밝혔다.
보물섬 사업을 총괄하는 구루컴퍼니 최원혁 대표는 “최종 검수 및 품질 보증에 필요한 인건비는 API 인프라에서 발생하는 매출 기반의 R/S(Revenue Share) 방식으로 충당할 계획이며, 이를 통해 중소 콘텐츠 제작사도 번역 비용 부담 없이 글로벌 진출을 시도할 수 있도록 지원하겠다”고 덧붙였다.
그는 “이번 창업도약 프로그램 선정을 계기로, MALT를 단순한 번역 툴이 아닌 K-콘텐츠 수출을 위한 핵심 인프라로 키워가겠다”며 “국내외 유력 플랫폼과의 협업을 통해 빠르게 실질적 성과를 창출할 것”이라고 강조했다.
한편 ‘콘텐츠 스타트업 투자연계 창업도약 프로그램’은 콘텐츠 창업기업의 자생력 강화를 목표로 한국콘텐츠진흥원이 운영하는 사업이다. 민간 투자기관으로부터 단일 4억 원 이상의 투자를 유치한 스타트업을 대상으로, 최대 2억 원의 사업화 자금과 맞춤형 멘토링, 투자자 초청 피칭 기회 등을 제공한다.

Guru Company (CEO Wonhyuk Choi), which operates the webtoon and web novel API infrastructure 'Treasure Island', has been finally selected for the '2025 Content Startup Investment-linked Startup Leap Program' hosted by the Korea Creative Content Agency under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
This selection is the result of a focused evaluation of the content startup’s global expansion potential and technological competitiveness. Guru Company has attracted 2 billion won in investment through a pre-A round in 2024, and is currently in full swing attracting Series A investment. Through this business selection, the company will receive up to 200 million won in commercialization funds and a customized scale-up program.
Guru Company is a technology startup that operates the webtoon and web novel API infrastructure 'Treasure Island', which provides content to major domestic corporate apps. It is currently developing the LLM-based automatic localization solution 'MALT' (Multi-model Automated Localization and Translation) as a core technology for expanding its API globally. MALT is a one-stop pipeline that automates the entire localization process from OCR to translation, inpainting, and typeset by combining the latest AI models such as GPT-4o, Claude, LaMa, and YOLOv8.
“Although the recent rapid development of AI technology has led to dramatic improvements in OCR and machine translation quality, webtoon localization still relies on fragmented manual processes, which consume excessive time and money,” said Guru Company CTO Hwang-soo Kim. “If MALT is commercialized, the entire process can be automated, reducing localization costs and time by up to 90%. In addition, global distribution, which has been limited to domestic hits so far, can be expanded to all K-content through ‘Treasure Island.’”
Guru Company CEO Wonhyuk Choi, who is in charge of the Treasure Island business, added, “We plan to cover the labor costs required for final inspection and quality assurance through the R/S (Revenue Share) method based on sales generated from the API infrastructure. Through this, we will support small and medium-sized content production companies to attempt to enter the global market without the burden of translation costs.”
He emphasized, “With this selection for the startup leap program as an opportunity, we will grow MALT from a simple translation tool to a core infrastructure for exporting K-content,” and “We will quickly create tangible results through collaboration with influential platforms at home and abroad.”
Meanwhile, the 'Content Startup Investment Linked Startup Leap Program' is a project operated by the Korea Creative Content Agency with the goal of strengthening the self-reliance of content startups. It provides startups that have attracted a single investment of 400 million won or more from private investment institutions with up to 200 million won in commercialization funds, customized mentoring, and opportunities to invite investors and pitch.

一方、「コンテンツスタートアップ投資連携創業跳躍プログラム」は、コンテンツ創業企業の自生力強化を目標に韓国コンテンツ振興院が運営する事業だ。民間投資機関から単一4億ウォン以上の投資を誘致したスタートアップを対象に、最大2億ウォンの事業化資金とカスタマイズされたメンタリング、投資家招待ピッチング機会などを提供する。
