Artificial intelligence (AI) company Upstage (CEO Kim Seong-hun) announced on the 19th that it has entered into a strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and will engage in joint sales and market entry activities in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) and US markets. Furthermore, Amazon, AWS's parent company, has reportedly invested a minority stake in Upstage. The investment amount was not disclosed.
Under this collaboration, Upstage will designate AWS as its preferred cloud provider and leverage AWS's machine learning and AI infrastructure to advance its large-scale language model (LLM) platform, "Solar," and document processing solutions. Key technologies leveraged include Amazon SageMaker, AWS Trainium, and Inferentia.
Through this collaboration, the two companies plan to jointly provide optimized generative AI solutions for sectors with high security and performance requirements, such as public institutions and regulated industries. To achieve this, they will also actively pursue joint market entry and sales activities in the APAC and US regions.
Upstage has been training and operating Solar models based on AWS infrastructure, and has improved efficiency and performance through advanced preprocessing technology and its own scaling technique, 'DUS (Depth-Up Scaling).'
Upstage's main Solar models include the "Solar Mini," with 10.7 billion parameters, the "Solar Pro," with 22 billion parameters, and the "Solar Pro 2," with 31 billion parameters. These models are available through the Amazon Bedrock Marketplace, AWS SageMaker JumpStart, and AWS Marketplace, and are currently being used in diverse industries, including finance, healthcare, law, and education.
Upstage recently introduced a hybrid architecture combining chat and inference modes with its recently released "Solar Pro 2." This model supports complex inference and agentic tasks based on tool integration, and focuses on providing high-performance AI services based on Korean language and specialized domain knowledge.
Upstage also offers "Document Intelligence," a document-based AI solution, on the AWS Marketplace. This solution extracts and structures information from various document formats, such as contracts, invoices, and financial statements, making it easily usable in downstream AI applications.
Meanwhile, Upstage and AWS jointly launched the "AI Initiative" in April to support the expansion of generative AI use among educational institutions and non-profit organizations. Upstage provides AI model APIs free of charge, while AWS provides cloud infrastructure, educational tools, and training platforms. Approximately 200 institutions, including Seoul National University and KAIST, are participating in the program.
AWS stated that “Upstage is contributing to the spread of AI technology in various fields spanning the public sector and corporations,” and Upstage stated that “through this collaboration, we will expand our influence in the global AI market and provide secure, reliable, high-performance generative AI solutions.”
