Vibe Company, an AI and big data specialist, won the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) Director's Award at the 19th Korea Meteorological Industry Awards, hosted by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and the Korea Meteorological Industry Technology Institute (KMETI), on the 27th. The KMA awards recognize companies, organizations, and individuals who have contributed to the utilization of meteorological information and industrial development. This year, 17 companies applied, and the final winner was selected after a public and expert review.
Vibe Company was recognized for its achievements in building a city-level, high-resolution (10-25m grid) 3D weather and climate digital twin platform. This platform combines real-time CCTV and IoT data with AI deep learning to produce relevant weather information on issues such as freezing, fog, and heat-related illnesses. In particular, it is recognized as a next-generation technology capable of three-dimensionally analyzing urban microclimate, as it enables data observation of wind flow at different altitudes, such as "building-induced wind," which was difficult to capture with existing two-dimensional systems.
During the research process, the company secured two patents, including a "method for interpolating meteorological observation information into 3D grid information," and registered four software applications, accumulating institutional achievements. Furthermore, the company demonstrated technological reliability by achieving performance goals exceeding national standards, including processing 300 simultaneous connections and achieving a response speed of less than one second. This achievement represents significant technological value, as it marks the first domestic achievement of a challenging task requiring the integration of disparate technologies such as meteorology, urban engineering, GIS, AI, and digital twins.
Economic benefits are also expected, including improved energy efficiency and reduced costs for responding to meteorological disasters. In fact, annual cost savings of over 15 billion won are estimated for road management, power waste, and emergency response, and if expanded nationwide, the ripple effect is expected to reach hundreds of billions of won.
This achievement aligns with the Korea Meteorological Administration's "Basic Plan for Fostering the Meteorological Industry" and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's smart city pilot city policy. Demonstration has been completed in Songpa-gu and Siheung-si. It is expected to expand into a core foundation for the expansion of national smart cities, the advancement of disaster prediction systems, and the creation of a convergence industry between meteorology and climate.
Kim Kyung-seo, CEO of Vibe Company, said, “This achievement of implementing the first and unprecedented weather and climate digital twin in Korea is officially recognized as a technology absolutely necessary in the era of climate change.” He added, “We will continue to advance AI and data fusion technologies to contribute to national policy.”
