IoT and embedded security specialist Kuntec (CEO Bang Hyuk-jun) announced that it has commenced joint development of 'KR-CyberOne', a next-generation ship cyber resilience integrated platform, together with the Korean Register (KR) and a domestic ship management specialist company.
This collaboration is seen as a strategic step toward proactively responding to the strengthened cyber resilience regulations UR E26 and E27 of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), and to spearhead global maritime cybersecurity technology standards. As cyber threat response capabilities become increasingly crucial, particularly in the shipping industry, where digital transformation is accelerating, the participating organizations are prioritizing enhancing the safety and resilience of vessel operations through platform development.
On September 2nd, Kuntec officially announced the start of a three-party joint R&D effort through a kickoff meeting held at the partner company's headquarters. This meeting, the first working-level meeting following the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in August, discussed the direction of platform development and specific implementation plans. Specifically, the functional design direction was developed based on the on-site requirements of ship operators, the platform's end users. Kuntec plans to incorporate these requirements into the platform from the early stages of development, implementing a security solution optimized for real-world operating environments.
In this project, the three organizations will each share responsibilities based on their respective expertise. Kuntec will oversee the planning, development, and maintenance of the platform, leveraging its accumulated expertise in IoT and embedded security. As an internationally recognized classification society, Korea Register of Shipping (KR) will provide regulatory interpretation and technical verification advisory services. A ship management company will leverage its operational experience to identify field requirements and provide a testing environment. This collaboration is expected to enable the development of a practical and applicable cyber resilience platform.
“It is very meaningful to embark on a project to establish a new standard for maritime cybersecurity with partners with expertise in each field,” said Bang Hyuk-jun, CEO of Kuntec. “We will successfully develop KR-CyberOne and develop it into a competitive commercial platform in the global maritime cybersecurity market, contributing to the digital transformation and sustainable growth of the shipping industry.”
