Enbionia, a company specializing in advanced composite materials, announced on the 14th that it has participated as a joint research institute in the 'Global Enterprise Industry Technology Linkage R&D' project supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and hosted by the Korea Institute of Technology Evaluation and Planning (KEIT), and has begun developing domestic technology for insulating materials for electric vehicle (EV) drive motors together with the host organization, Toray Advanced Materials Korea.
The research and development project is titled "Development of Domestic Production and Commercialization Technology for 170gsm Meta-aramid Insulation Sheet with an Insulation Resistance of 30kV/mm or Higher for EV High-Voltage Motors." The research project will last two years and six months, ending in 2027. This is a nationally supported core technology development project, receiving KRW 2.5 billion in government funding.
This project aims to foster domestic technological foundations and promote self-reliance in advanced materials fields, where technology adoption is difficult, through collaboration between foreign-invested companies possessing global technology and domestic industry, academia, and research institutes. Toray Advanced Materials will develop advanced technologies for core insulating materials, while Enbionia will be responsible for commercializing these materials into insulating sheets and enhancing the process. This collaboration encompasses the entire technological cycle, from raw materials to finished products.
Meta-aramid-based insulation sheets are used across industries requiring high insulation and heat resistance, including electric vehicle drive motors, transformers, and aerospace. Currently, the industry relies entirely on imports. Classified as a strategic material, only available in select countries, they require a stable supply and domestic technology. Enbioneer secures a stable supply of raw materials through an exclusive supply agreement with Toray Advanced Materials Korea. Through this joint research, Enbioneer plans to secure manufacturing technology for insulation sheets based on domestic raw materials, thereby enhancing its competitiveness in domestic and international markets.
Enbioneer is currently building a dedicated meta-aramid paper production line in Jecheon, North Chungcheong Province, and possesses extensive experience in mass-producing wet composite materials, including ceramic paper and water purification media. This project is expected to further strengthen Enbioneer's technological competitiveness across the entire cycle, from raw materials to finished products, by combining Toray Advanced Materials' raw material technology with Enbioneer's composite materials production capabilities.
Han Jeong-cheol, CEO of Enbionia, emphasized, "This project goes beyond simple technological development and marks a turning point in strategic cooperation that combines global raw material technology with domestic composite materials technology. We will achieve meaningful results in strategic materials areas where localization is urgently needed, and we will implement high-quality insulation materials that customers demand using domestic technology. We will concentrate all of our company's capabilities to make a leap forward as a leading company in the field of advanced composite materials, in line with the national trend of material self-sufficiency."
