SBVA (SBIVA, CEO Lee Jun-pyo) announced that it successfully completed the 'AI Seminar' held for major investors (LPs) together with artificial intelligence (AI) portfolio companies at SBVA's Seoul Gangnam headquarters on the 17th.
SBVA holds seminars every quarter for major LPs to share trends in industries where SBVA focuses on investing, such as AI, deep tech, and robotics, and to network with portfolio companies. This year, we plan to hold seminars on AI, digital healthcare, and VC trends (IPOs, etc.).
This SBVA AI seminar was planned to provide insights into the rapidly changing AI technology and ecosystem in general, thereby increasing LPs’ understanding of the AI industry as a whole, and to provide a platform for future business cooperation discussions by establishing a point of contact between LPs and AI startups.
The event was attended by about 50 industry insiders, including five SBVA portfolio companies: ▲Lightweight Giant Language Model (sLLM) AI startup 'Upstage', ▲AI model optimization technology specialist 'Nota', ▲AI semiconductor startup 'HyperExcel' optimized for LLM (Large Language Model) inference, ▲Semiconductor design (fabless) startup 'Soteria', and ▲Custom semiconductor design specialist 'SemiFive', as well as major domestic investors such as IBK Industrial Bank of Korea, SK Networks, LG, KT, Krafton, and Hanwha Life Insurance.
Part 1 was a presentation by Jongwook Lee, Head of the Tech Team at Samsung Securities Research Center, on the topic of 'Understanding the AI Industry in 2025: The Need for AI Semiconductors and the Development Direction of AI.' The seminar consisted of a total of 7 sessions, including ▲The Birth of Generative AI ▲Technical Changes in Semiconductors ▲The Development Direction of AI Semiconductors and Creation of an Ecosystem ▲The Advent of the AI Agent Era, and deeply covered insights into the current state of AI across all industries and software since the emergence of generative AI.
In the second part, five portfolio companies presented their innovative AI technologies and future plans and directions in the IR pitching session. In the Q&A session following the presentation, there was an active and in-depth discussion on the impact of the US chip export restriction policy on the semiconductor ecosystem and the direction of AI semiconductor development.
An official who attended the AI seminar said, “This seminar was a very meaningful opportunity to see the latest trends in the AI ecosystem and promising AI startups at a glance.”
Jin Yoon-jung, SBVA Partner, said, “We will continue to pursue various activities to grow the industry in the future, and we will also actively discover and foster innovative AI companies that are competitive in the global market.”
Meanwhile, SBVA raised a fund worth a total of 410 billion won last year, invested 120 billion won in 18 companies aiming to enter the global market, and recovered about 200 billion won. In 2023, it was awarded the Minister of SMEs and Startups Award in the VC Large Category of the Year in recognition of its contribution to revitalizing investment in SMEs and venture companies, including co-hosting an event with the Ministry of SMEs and Startups to invite Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.
