SparkBio (CEO Hong-Joo Lee), a bio and healthcare specialized accelerator operated by global accelerator SparkLabs, announced on the 22nd that it signed a business agreement with Pohang City to establish a clinical specialized hospital.
The signing ceremony was held at Maru 360, a startup incubation center in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, and major organizations including SparkBio, Pohang City (Mayor Lee Kang-deok), Pohang City Council (Chairman Kim Il-man), and Pohang Global Enterprise Innovation Park (CEO Lee Jae-hoon) participated.
Through this agreement, SparkBio will jointly participate in the project to establish a 'Clinical Specialized Hospital' within the Pohang City Global Enterprise Innovation Park, and will support the attraction and fostering of bio startups for ▲clinical research and development of innovative treatments ▲global clinical research platforms, etc.
The clinical specialty hospital will be built with a total project cost of approximately KRW 150 billion and a construction area of 38,400㎡, consisting of two buildings: a hospital and a health screening center. It will provide customized treatment for patients by linking the latest research results with real-time clinical applications, and it will be the first in Korea to be operated on a research grant basis through cooperation with global medical and research institutions and pharmaceutical companies.
Since signing a business agreement with Pohang City in 2022 to establish a startup cluster, SparkLabs has independently carried out various projects to foster the domestic bio startup ecosystem by referencing the bio innovation model of Basel, Switzerland, with the goal of establishing a global bio cluster.
In particular, in 2023, SparkBio, a specialized accelerator in the bio and healthcare fields, will be launched, and the company will operate Mediopen Lab, the first shared laboratory in Korea, with the Korea Health Management Association. It is currently supporting 13 bio startups with excellent technological prowess, including ▲InnoGenics ▲Genecast ▲Weysen.
Hong-Joo Lee, CEO of SparkBio, said, “It is meaningful to be able to lay the foundation for a leap forward as a global bio city through cooperation with Pohang City,” and “We will provide comprehensive support so that bio startups can lead future medical innovation based on the research achievements they have accumulated at specialized clinical hospitals.”
