Hanwha Hotels & Resorts is pushing forward with the creation of a large-scale theme park on the site of the Incheon Asian Games stadium.
On the morning of the 15th, Hanwha Hotels & Resorts and Incheon City signed a 'MOU for the revitalization of the metropolitan landfill site (equestrian center site)' with the above contents. The signing ceremony was attended by key officials including Kim Dong-sun, Vice President of Future Vision at Hanwha Hotels & Resorts, and Yoo Jeong-bok, Mayor of Incheon.
The target site is the Dream Park Equestrian Stadium where the 2014 Incheon Asian Games were held. It has an area of 170,000 m2, equivalent to 24 soccer fields (7,140 m2).
During the Asian Games, various types of equestrian events, such as obstacles, dressage, and cross-country, were held, but since then, it has been criticized for its lack of use. The actual number of equestrian events held has been around 1.5 times per year, and it has been virtually neglected. Accordingly, the Capital Region Landfill Corporation has held several bids for operators until recently, but has not been successful.
This project will be promoted as a private investment project (BTO) and is expected to include various leisure and cultural facilities, including an equestrian stadium utilizing the existing site.
To this end, subsidiaries Aqua Planet (aquarium), Hanwha Next (equestrian stadium), and Hanwha Foodtech (food and beverage service) will also be lending their support. An official from Hanwha Hotels & Resorts said, “It is true that leisure facilities were somewhat lacking compared to the number of visiting tourists,” and added, “Through this project, we will contribute to the creation of a complex cultural space as well as regional revitalization.”
Kim Dong-sun, Vice President of Future Vision at Hanwha Hotels & Resorts, said, “It is very meaningful to be able to create a new landmark at the site of the Asian Games that received the attention of the entire nation in 2014.” He added, “By creating a completely new entertainment culture space, we will ensure that this place once again receives the spotlight from the entire nation.”
