Ministry of SMEs and Startups recruits two new startup-focused universities

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups (Minister Oh Young-joo, hereinafter referred to as the Ministry of SMEs and Startups) announced on the 13th that it will be recruiting for two new startup-focused universities.

'Entrepreneurship-centered universities' are leading institutions in the entrepreneurship ecosystem that support local startups and activate university-based startups by utilizing the university's entrepreneurship infrastructure. Currently, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups has designated nine universities with excellent entrepreneurship support capabilities by region as 'Entrepreneurship-centered universities' to support local entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship activation through universities.

The purpose of this new recruitment of entrepreneurship-centered universities is to reduce the gap in entrepreneurship infrastructure between metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas and to strengthen the role of entrepreneurship-centered universities as regional hubs. In particular, this year, we plan to actively utilize the entrepreneurship infrastructure, such as professional manpower and equipment owned by universities, to support startups and to enhance the role of entrepreneurship-centered universities by strengthening ties with related organizations in the region.

The application target is a university located outside the metropolitan area that has excellent startup infrastructure such as a dedicated organization, human resources, and collaboration network. Universities wishing to apply should submit a preliminary application by 4:00 PM on Monday, January 20 and then submit related documents such as a business plan through the K-Startup website by 4:00 PM on February 7.

After reviewing the qualifications of the universities that applied, we plan to select the universities with the best capabilities after document evaluation and presentation evaluation. Approximately 7.4 billion won will be provided annually to universities selected as startup-centered universities, and through this, the universities will play a leading role in activating the local startup ecosystem, such as supporting startup companies, spreading startup culture, and networking to activate startups.

Kyung-won Cho, Director of Startup Policy at the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, said, “This new recruitment of startup-centered universities will be a new leap forward to revitalize the local startup ecosystem and university-based startups,” and added, “We will work to spread the local startup culture and promote university-based startups through universities with excellent capabilities.”
