The Gyeonggi Center for Creative Economy and Innovation (hereafter referred to as the “Gyeonggi Innovation Center”) announced on the 13th that it will cooperate with Greater Portland Inc. (hereafter referred to as “GPI”), a public-private cooperative organization leading the economic development of the Portland metropolitan area, to fully support promising domestic startups’ advancement into the U.S. The two organizations signed a business agreement (MOU) on the 9th, local time.
Through this agreement, the Gyeonggi Innovation Center has secured a local beachhead for Korean startups in the Portland area, and in cooperation with GPI, it will provide free office space for 90 days to companies entering the market, as well as practical support such as business matching with local companies and expert consulting on tax and labor issues.
Portland is an innovation cluster where global corporate headquarters such as Nike, Columbia, and Intel are located, and various industries such as apparel/outdoor, bioscience, cleantech, software, and media are developed, providing an environment optimized for startup growth and business expansion. In addition, it is located on the west coast of the United States, so it has excellent accessibility to the Asian market, and it forms a metropolitan economic zone covering seven counties in Oregon and Washington, so it is attracting attention as a strategic base for startups aiming for global scale-up.
Kim Won-kyung, director of the Gyeonggi Innovation Center, said, “Through this agreement, we have established a practical support system that will allow Korean startups to enter and grow in the U.S. market stably,” and added, “As a global hub center for the National Creative Economy Innovation Center, we will continue to expand our local network in the U.S. to support the creation of more global unicorn companies.”
