Busan Changgyeong, 'Global Startup Hub Busan' International Architectural Design Competition Begins

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Hyung-joon) and Busan Creative Economy Innovation Center (Director Kim Yong-woo, hereinafter referred to as Busan Creative Economy ) announced that they will begin the international architectural design competition (hereinafter referred to as the competition) for the 'Global Startup Hub Busan' currently being built at the first wharf of Busan Port's North Port to foster domestic and foreign startups on the 13th.

'Global Startup Hub Busan' was selected as a public offering project by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups in July of last year (2024). This public offering is hosted by the city and Busan Changgyeong, and the Busan International Architecture Festival Organizing Committee, a non-profit organization, is in charge of operating and managing the public offering.

In order to commemorate the return of the 'Global Startup Hub Busan' to the citizens in the year of the 150th anniversary of the opening of Busan Port (1876), we aim to open next year (2026). Through this competition, we hope to discover creative and innovative design plans that revive the historical significance of Busan's heritage as a refugee capital at Pier 1 of Busan Port and remodel the existing buildings.

The first pier of the North Port of Busan Port is owned by the city and is registered as a cultural heritage of Busan. It is also listed on the tentative list of World Heritage sites as one of the key heritage sites for promoting the registration of Busan as a refugee capital as a World Heritage site.

The 'Global Startup Hub Busan', planned to cost 30.8 billion won (design cost 1.2 billion won) and have a total floor area of 9,128 m2, will be equipped with office space, historical and cultural space, communication space, support space, and convenience facilities.

This competition will be conducted in two stages. In the first stage, a nominated architect will be selected through a nomination application contest, and in the second stage, the final winner will be determined through a proposal contest in which only nominated architects will participate.

The first round of competition will be held from the 13th to the 24th, and architects who wish to participate should fill out the application form and submit it to the official email (compebaf@gmail.com). The selection results will be announced on the official competition website on February 5th.

The second round of competition will run from February 5 to March 21, and the final winners will be announced at the end of March based on the evaluations by the judging committee. Details on the second round of competition will be announced on February 5.

The final winner will be given priority negotiation rights for the design contract, and the other nominees will each be paid a compensation of 25 million won.

Detailed information regarding this contest can be found on the official website .

A Busan Changgyeong official said, “We ask for the interest and participation of many domestic and international architects in this competition, which is the starting point for creating Busan as a global startup hub.”
