CXL fabless startup Panesia participated in the electronics show CES 2025 held in Las Vegas from the 7th to the 10th and introduced the CES Innovation Award-winning 'CXL-based GPU Memory Expansion Kit'. The product is built based on Panesia's self-developed CXL 3.1 IP and can be used to build cost-effective AI infrastructure.
Panesia's CES 2025 Exhibit Overview
Panesia participated in the CES 2025 exhibition. CES (Consumer Electronics Show), planned and operated by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), is a major exhibition with a 50-year tradition where leading global companies and startups, key players in future technological innovation, gather to showcase next-generation innovative technologies. This year's CES 2025 attracted over 150,000 attendees and over 4,000 companies and organizations to share their technologies.
At this exhibition, Panesia showcased its GPU memory expansion solution, the "CXL-based GPU Memory Expansion Kit," designed based on its core product, the CXL 3.1 IP (semiconductor design asset). The solution consists of a GPU (CXL-GPU) equipped with Panesia's CXL IP and a memory expansion device (CXL Memory Expansion Device). Users can expand the GPU's system memory capacity by connecting as many memory expansion devices as needed to the GPU.
Panesia's solution has a significant advantage in reducing AI infrastructure costs. Recently, large-scale AI services requiring multiple terabytes of memory, such as ChatGPT, have become widely used. To meet these memory demands, AI service operators typically purchase multiple GPUs to expand memory. However, this often leads to wasted computational resources and associated costs, as multiple GPUs are purchased to secure memory capacity even when computational resources are already sufficient.
Panesia proposes a different approach: equip GPUs according to the required computational load. If memory capacity is insufficient, a memory expansion unit equipped with a high-density memory resource can be added instead of the GPU. Consequently, multiple GPUs previously purchased for memory expansion can be replaced with memory expansion units, minimizing wasted computational resources and reducing AI infrastructure costs.
◆ The core of Panesia's solution: low-latency CXL IP
This cost-effective GPU memory expansion through Panesia's CXL-based GPU memory expansion kit is possible thanks to Panesia's CXL IP embedded within the device (CXL-GPU, CXL Memory Expansion Unit). By utilizing Panesia's CXL IP, the memory of the CXL-GPU device and the CXL Memory Expansion Unit can be integrated into a single memory space by connecting them. A series of operations to manage the integrated memory are automatically handled by Panesia's high-performance CXL IP, so the CXL-GPU can access the memory of the Memory Expansion Unit with only general read and write commands, just like when accessing the GPU's internal memory. As a result, the user can enjoy the effect of expanding the GPU's internal system memory capacity.
◆ CES Innovation Award Winner for 2 Consecutive Years
Panesia was awarded the CES 2025 Innovation Award for its technological prowess and product quality of its ‘CXL-equipped GPU memory expansion kit.’
The CES Innovation Awards, presented by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) to world-leading innovative technologies and products, are considered the highest honor at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). A panel of judges, comprised of approximately 100 industry experts from around the world, meticulously evaluates the products' technology, functionality, originality, innovation, and, ultimately, how the technology can benefit humanity. This is why the CES Innovation Awards are known to hold significant significance for the winning companies.
Panesia won the CES Innovation Award at CES 2024 last year for its "CXL-equipped AI Accelerator," and has also won an Innovation Award at CES 2025, making it the second consecutive year it has won the award. Panesia is the only company to have won a CES Innovation Award for an AI-focused CXL solution for two consecutive years. Regarding this, a Panesia representative said, "It is very meaningful because experts at CTA have recognized the technology and innovation of our CXL 3.1 IP," expressing their joy at winning the award for the second consecutive year.
◆ External reactions
Panesia's booth at this year's CES 2025 exhibition was visited by IT executives from various global corporations, including global hyperscalers, server manufacturers, and AI service developers, as well as overseas investors. A Panesia representative said, "Since the GPU memory expansion kit we exhibited this time is a solution that can reduce AI infrastructure costs, companies directly or indirectly related to AI data centers showed a lot of interest." "Since these companies actually spend a lot of money on AI infrastructure, they all sympathized with the high price of existing GPU solutions and expressed their desire to introduce and verify servers like the ones we exhibited into the AI infrastructure they operate and use."
The official continued, “We will do our best to become global pioneers together with the young engineers who work with us by strengthening our substantive relationships with clients with whom we are currently discussing business, including those we met at this exhibition, and focusing on increasing new customers in various AI semiconductor and small and medium-sized data center sectors.”
