PIP Labs, the developer of Story, an IP blockchain platform leading the AI era, has signed a strategic partnership with Stability AI, a global leader in image generation AI, and is moving forward to build an innovative ecosystem for copyright protection and monetization of AI-generated content.
PIP Labs, founded in San Francisco, USA, is the core developer of Story. It was co-founded by Jason Zhao, who came from Google AI subsidiary DeepMind, at the age of 22. The company has raised a total of $140 million (approximately 190 billion won) in investment. Notably, the world's largest venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) led three consecutive investment rounds, which is a very rare case, and Coinbase is a representative example. Story is a blockchain platform that converts intellectual property (IP) into programmable digital assets, helping IP owners protect, share, and monetize their ideas.
Stability AI is the developer of Stable Diffusion, the world's most widely used open-source AI model, and is a leader in image generation AI.
This collaboration between the two companies focuses on protecting the rights of all contributors to AI-generated content, including creators, developers, and artists, and establishing a fair compensation system. Story specifically addressed the lack of a clear path for creators to monetize their derivative works within the open-source AI ecosystem. Therefore, through collaboration with Stability AI, Story will establish a systematic revenue distribution system by tracking contributions across the entire AI-generated content lifecycle and transparently recording this data on the blockchain.
“With the unprecedented advancement of AI technology leading to an explosion of creative works, the synergy between AI and blockchain is not only powerful but essential for protecting contributors’ rights,” said Jason Zhao, co-founder of PIP Labs. “By leveraging Stability AI and Story’s technologies to provide fair compensation to contributors and establish a system to protect copyright, we plan to open a new era of open source AI development.”
AI applications currently operating within the Story platform have entered the commercialization phase. The AI image remix platform "Mahojin" and the AI creative e-commerce platform "ABLO" are providing real-world services by combining Story's blockchain technology with Stability AI's AI models. Both services support users' creative activities while leveraging Story's proven technology to ensure provenance and copyright attribution across the entire AI stack.
“Protecting creators’ copyrights and empowering them to receive appropriate compensation for their work is a core value of Stability AI,” said Scott Trowbridge, Vice President of Stability AI. “Story’s innovative blockchain technology and our AI model combine to provide tangible benefits to creators.”
Story plans to expand its system to allow all contributors to share in the profits generated by AI models. For example, it will allow artists to register various types of learning data, such as their unique styles or voices, as IPs, allowing anyone to leverage and fine-tune these IPs to create their own AI models. Story plans to reward the revenue generated through this process based on their level of contribution, fostering a sustainable and fair ecosystem for the AI era.
