The Ministry of SMEs and Startups launches a cross-ministry task force to eradicate technology theft from SMEs.

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups announced that it will establish a joint “Cross-Ministry Response Team to Eradicate Technology Theft from Small and Medium Enterprises” with relevant ministries to quickly support small and medium enterprises that have suffered damage from technology theft and eliminate blind spots in the technology protection system, and that it will begin operations on January 22.

The inter-ministerial response team is a follow-up measure to the "Measures to Eradicate Technology Theft from Small and Medium-sized Enterprises" announced in September of last year. It is a collaborative system involving six key technology protection ministries, including the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Fair Trade Commission, the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the National Police Agency, and the National Intelligence Service.

While technology theft cases targeting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are becoming increasingly sophisticated and diverse, there have been concerns that the lack of effective division of roles and information sharing across government agencies makes it difficult for affected companies to receive comprehensive and effective support. To address these issues, the inter-ministerial response team is establishing a permanent cooperative structure and engaging in joint responses.

In the event of a technology theft incident, the response team will discuss ways to connect available support programs through inter-agency cooperation and division of roles, and support affected companies to quickly recover. Furthermore, the team will consider introducing a "SME Technology Protection Bulletin Board" to reduce confusion in reporting and support procedures.

Furthermore, the plan is to proactively coordinate differences between ministries during the process of revising laws and systems related to technology protection. Furthermore, for systems that apply simultaneously across multiple ministries, a joint response strategy will be developed. Furthermore, the plan is to minimize institutional gaps by identifying collaborative projects that leverage the capabilities of different ministries, such as jointly utilizing technology protection experts.

The relevant ministries attending the launch ceremony agreed on the need for cooperation to eradicate technology theft and restore damages, and agreed to pursue continued information exchange and joint responses. First Vice Minister of SMEs and Startups Noh Yong-seok announced his commitment to strengthening government-level measures to protect SME technology.
