Sonics Signs Si-SAW Foundry Supply Agreement with China's Newsonic

Sonics, a specialized foundry company specializing in advanced filter technologies, announced that it has signed a foundry supply agreement and strategic partnership with NewSonic, a Chinese fabless company focusing on Si-SAW (Silicon Surface Acoustic Wave) technology. NewSonic is a new fabless company supplying components to major Chinese terminal manufacturers.

Under this agreement, Sonics will serve as a specialized foundry for Newsonic, manufacturing high-performance Si-SAW wafers for the TF-SAW series. Newsonic will then supply the finished filter and RF module products based on these wafers to Tier 1 smartphone manufacturers in China.

The two companies plan to combine Sonics' foundry technology and manufacturing capabilities with NewSonic's design technology and regional market competitiveness to promote the market expansion of next-generation filter solutions with cost efficiency and high performance.

Sonics CEO Yang Hyung-guk explained that through this collaboration, the company has expanded the mass production system for Si-SAW foundry technology, which is currently being supplied to global customers in North America, to the Greater China market.

Si-SAW filter foundry technology combines a piezoelectric layer with a silicon substrate. Compared to conventional filters, it boasts superior power withstand performance, temperature characteristics, and a high Q value. These characteristics make it ideal for next-generation smartphones, 5G infrastructure, and advanced wearable devices.

Sonics is already mass-producing and supplying products utilizing this technology through a leading North American communications semiconductor company, and is conducting additional due diligence to expand its application. Final products utilizing this technology have been adopted by a leading global wearables company in its flagship product line, serving the premium market.

NewSonic's Chief Operating Officer, Geng Deqiang, said the company is building a vertically integrated solution that combines NewSonic's Si-SAW manufacturing technology with NewSonic's packaging technology and understanding of the Asian market, ensuring production scalability and quality consistency.

Meanwhile, Newsonic, headquartered in Shenzhen, China, specializes in the design and manufacture of acoustic filters and RF front-end modules and is preparing to list on the Chinese stock market in the first half of this year.
