Lunit wins contract for Malta's National Breast Cancer Screening Program

Medical artificial intelligence (AI) company Lunit (CEO Seo Beom-seok) announced on the 5th that it was selected as the final AI solution provider in the public bidding for the Maltese government's national breast cancer screening program.

This seven-year contract is notable for its comprehensive implementation of Lunit's solutions across Malta's national breast cancer program, rather than a proof-of-concept (PoC) or limited rollout. During the contract period, Lunit's AI solutions will be integrated into Malta's screening workflow to support mammography screening.

Runit is the first AI company to win a contract for a national breast cancer screening program within an EU member state. While there have been cases in Europe where AI was introduced at the regional level or in private medical institutions, this is the first time that it has been officially adopted for a national screening program.

Lunit has been providing AI solutions to private medical institutions in Malta since 2023 and has achieved positive results. Maltese medical professionals visited the Swedish Kapió St. Göran Hospital to verify the solution's use cases and clinical environment, which led to its nationwide introduction.

A Runit representative explained, “The safety and effectiveness were proven through an empirical review by the Maltese government and medical professionals, and this was a key factor in the decision to introduce it nationwide.”

Meanwhile, Runit has accumulated operational know-how by participating in regional government breast cancer screening programs in European countries such as the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Iceland, and Portugal, and this Malta contract is evaluated as an example of this experience leading to national-level trust and adoption.

Seo Beom-seok, CEO of Lunit, said, “The selection of AI for the national screening program shows that AI has become a core element of public healthcare infrastructure beyond a clinical tool.” He added, “Malta’s successful introduction of AI will serve as a model for establishing AI-based screening systems not only in Europe but also in countries around the world.”
