Haesung Optics announced on the 9th that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with KNS, a KOSDAQ-listed secondary battery and robot automation equipment specialist, for a ‘strategic partnership for the establishment of an advanced AI autonomous production system.’
This agreement aims to go beyond the existing smart factory concept and establish an advanced AI autonomous production system that learns data and controls physical variables in real time, and to create cooperative synergies in future new business areas such as robots and next-generation actuators based on this system.
Specifically, the two companies have moved beyond the traditional electronic product contract manufacturing (EMS) model, which relies on simple equipment purchases or external production facilities. This approach establishes a joint development and direct collaboration model that directly connects KNS, which holds the original equipment technology, with Haesung Optics' manufacturing sites. This approach has reduced equipment optimization and maintenance risks that can arise during the contract manufacturing process, and has secured manufacturing independence, enabling Haesung Optics to immediately incorporate its process expertise into its equipment.
According to a specific implementation plan, Haesung Optics will pursue a project to build an AI-powered OIS automation line, centered around its Vietnamese subsidiary, Haesung Vina. The first order will be placed in April, the second phase will commence in June, and the final test run and completion of construction are targeted for August. Even after the facility is built, KNS will maintain a dedicated team of engineers on-site to ensure process stabilization and operational support.
KNS, a technology-driven company with a market share of approximately 75% in the domestic cylindrical battery current interrupter automation equipment market, has recently expanded its manufacturing automation capabilities by supplying industrial robots to Japanese global companies and Tier 1 semiconductor suppliers. Haesung Optics plans to apply KNS's robot control technology to its own processes to improve production yields and enhance cost competitiveness.
The two companies plan to expand their collaboration beyond mobile components to include future growth businesses such as robot actuators, autonomous driving sensors, and electrical components. By jointly pursuing process technology advancement projects for mass production of next-generation products and sharing priority access to related technologies, they expect to accelerate their entry into the robotics and future mobility markets.
Since CEO Cho Chul took office, Haesung Optics has been pursuing a strategy of selection and concentration, streamlining non-core businesses and focusing on optical solutions to improve performance and normalize management. The company plans to use this agreement as an opportunity to simultaneously strengthen its manufacturing competitiveness and secure new growth engines.
A representative of Haesung Optics said, “This collaboration with KNS is a turning point that will strengthen our manufacturing leadership through an AI-based autonomous production system,” and added, “We will enhance both corporate value and shareholder value by strengthening the profitability of our core business and visualizing new businesses.”
