SIG Korea, a leading global food and beverage packaging solutions company, announced on the 11th that it has signed an agreement with 10 organizations, including the Dongdaemun-gu Office, the Korea Upcycling Craft Association, and the Korea Packaging Recycling Business Cooperative, to expand resource recycling practices.
This agreement was promoted to establish a sustainable circular economy model based on regional principles and to promote a culture of resource recycling through collaboration between the public, private, universities, and specialized organizations. The signing ceremony was held at the Dongdaemun-gu Office on February 9th, and approximately 30 people attended.
Participating organizations will collaborate to promote recycling of key recyclables, such as paper packs, sterilized bags, and PET bottles, and to establish a regional circular economy model. SIG Korea plans to support on-site operations and expand participation by providing collection vehicles and promoting resource recycling projects.
The participating organizations will actively promote the "Sseuksakkukkuk National Practice Movement" and the "Sseuksakkukkuk 100% Recyclable Circular Economy Platform," centered around the Dongdaemun-gu Resource Recycling Station. "Sseuksakkukkuk" is a four-step practice that involves emptying, rinsing, and pressing recyclables before disposal. Designed to reduce contamination and bulk issues caused by residual contents, it also fosters the production of high-quality recycled materials.
Detailed implementation plans will encourage citizen participation through education for kindergartens and elementary schools, the production of promotional songs and short-form videos, and the distribution of compressed comic-style guides. Recyclables will be collected through a separate collection and participant reward system, and daily-use rewards such as toilet paper and volume-based bags will be provided at Dongdaemun-gu resource recycling stations. Future expansion of rewards, including local currency, and a wider range of eligible items are also being considered.
The roles of each organization are divided into public relations and commendation support for Dongdaemun-gu Office, high-quality recovery and compensation linkage with Korea Environment Corporation, operation of Dongdaemun-gu Carbon Neutrality Support Center education program, regional innovation linkage with Sahmyook University, overall business management of Korea Upcycling Craft Association, business operation support for CJ CheilJedang, collection vehicle and public relations support for SIG Korea, and Seoul Milk and Sparkle campaign and education support.
SIG Korea CEO Myung-Hyeon Cho said, “The quality of recycling is determined at the separation and disposal stage,” and added, “We will strengthen on-site support to establish the practice standards for ‘Sseuksakkkukktak,’ and establish a circular structure in the region where recyclables such as paper packs are recycled into high-quality recycled raw materials.”
