The Global Policy Research Institute, affiliated with CODIT (CEO Ji-eun Jeong), published an issue paper titled “Policy Tasks for Global V2X Diffusion and Building a Safer Transportation System” on February 25th. The issue paper proposed three major policy tasks for the transition to a V2X-based transportation system: ▲financial support and establishment of an institutional framework ▲strengthening the importance of V2X technology in the Korea New Car Assessment Program (K-NCAP) ▲continuous management of V2X standard policies.
V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) is a direct short-range wireless communication technology that enables vehicles to identify and respond to surrounding situations that are difficult to recognize with vehicle sensors alone by sharing real-time information between vehicles and infrastructure such as other vehicles, road users, and traffic signals.
The issue paper emphasized that V2X-based transportation systems contribute to preventing traffic accidents and alleviating traffic congestion. As a result of applying V2X services on the 90.7km Sejong-Daejeon section of the next-generation Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) pilot project, the average number of accidents and the number of deaths and injuries decreased by approximately 20% over five years. Key service stability verification under real-world conditions is expected to be completed by 2025.
However, domestic V2X adoption is limited due to the lack of policies, procedures, and budgets for nationwide expansion. The researcher pointed out that policy delays could lead to gaps in traffic safety performance and future mobility industry competitiveness, and recommended the swift implementation of three key policy tasks.
Song Hae-young, director of the Codit Global Policy Research Institute, said, “V2X is a realistic policy solution to improve traffic accidents and congestion problems,” and added, “I hope that Korea will take the lead in discussions on future mobility and that the V2X policy transition will begin in earnest with the Gangneung ITS World Congress in October as an opportunity.”
