Plantner announced that it has won an award at the '2026 Edison Awards'.
The Edison Awards are an international technology award established to honor the innovative spirit of inventor Thomas Edison. Each year, finalists and winners are selected through a comprehensive evaluation of technologies submitted by companies and organizations around the world based on factors such as innovation, marketability, and social and environmental impact.
Plantner was selected as a finalist among numerous global entries, demonstrating both technological excellence and commercial viability. The winning technology is a controlled-release biodegradable, slow-release fertilizer utilizing alginic acid extracted from byproducts generated during seaweed processing.
This technology, which processes and coats alginate into beads, is designed to reduce fertilizer loss and gradually release nutrients in accordance with the crop's growth stage. This is expected to help alleviate issues raised by conventional chemical fertilizer use, such as soil acidification, nutrient loss, and increased costs for farmers.
It is also evaluated as a next-generation agricultural material technology that can simultaneously improve soil health and increase productivity, and presents the possibility of contributing to the transition to sustainable agriculture.
Plantner plans to use this award as an opportunity to expand into overseas markets and advance its product technology.
Shin Jeong-woo, CEO of Plantner, said, “This award is an opportunity to confirm the international competitiveness and feasibility of our technology,” and added, “We will continue to develop agricultural material technologies that reduce the burden on the environment.”
Meanwhile, in the global agricultural and fertilizer markets, investment and research and development in bio-based agricultural materials that contribute to carbon reduction and soil restoration are expanding.
