SMEC, a company specializing in machine tools, industrial robots, and ICT convergence solutions, has set out to target the smart construction market based on a specialized 5G network. The company announced that it is pursuing a business that combines a dedicated 5G network infrastructure with a smart site management system to improve safety management and productivity at construction sites.
Market growth prospects are also showing a positive trend. According to market research firms, the global Private 5G market is expected to expand from approximately $3.86 billion in 2025 to approximately $17.55 billion in 2030, showing an average annual growth rate of over 35%. Additionally, the IoT market in the construction sector is projected to grow from $11.46 billion in 2023 to approximately $33 billion in 2030.
SMEC is developing smart construction solutions utilizing specialized 5G networks, based on the manufacturing and ICT convergence technologies it has accumulated over the years. This solution is designed with a structure that enables the integration of site-specific networks, CCTV and IoT sensors, integrated control system operation, and maintenance services. It is also suggested that if project orders expand in the future, it could lead to new revenue streams.
The company also possesses past experience in applying safety management solutions to construction sites. SMEC introduced a CCTV-based safety management system at the Daejeon Merck construction site, currently being built by Kolon Global, utilizing real-time monitoring to manage the work environment and ensure safety.
5G specialized networks are dedicated communication networks built independently for specific industrial sites, characterized by providing a stable data transmission environment based on ultra-high speed and ultra-low latency. They are evaluated as being able to be utilized as an efficient communication infrastructure even in environments where various equipment and sensors operate simultaneously at large construction sites.
SMAC anticipates that by leveraging this network environment, it will be possible to establish a smart safety management system that connects high-resolution CCTVs and IoT safety sensors, enabling real-time monitoring of worker locations and site conditions. Furthermore, the company expects to improve process operational efficiency through features that allow for real-time status checks and remote management of construction equipment.
According to the company, inquiries regarding the application of specialized 5G networks are increasing as the demand for on-site digital transformation in the construction industry has recently grown, and the company is currently discussing specific implementation plans with several construction firms. A SMEC official stated, "Based on the technological capabilities secured in the smart manufacturing sector, we plan to support the digital transformation of construction sites and expand new business opportunities."
Recently, in the construction and infrastructure industries, there has been an increasing trend of adopting smart construction platforms that combine 5G specialized networks, IoT, and video analysis technologies, leading to a growing application of digital technologies for on-site safety management and productivity improvement.
