As competition among companies to capture users intensifies, the strategic importance of user experience (UX) and interface (UI) is also highlighted. As the UX and UI areas are acting as key factors in reducing customer churn and increasing conversion rates, interest in related jobs is also increasing across industries. Recently, the perception that it is an area only for those with specific majors such as design is fading, and it is establishing itself as a promising job group regardless of major.
Following this trend, both design majors and non-majors are paying attention to the UX/UI design field, but the reality is not easy. Non-majors often feel at a loss as to how to start, as they have no experience in learning the basics of design and connecting it to UX/UI jobs. Even for design majors, it is not easy to enter the relevant job, as they worry about the suitability of their major and UX/UI jobs.
Although the need for education centered on completing a portfolio linked to practical work and employability is raised here, the fact that there are limited processes that can systematically address this is also an obstacle for those who wish to enter the UX/UI job market.
In this atmosphere, practical UX/UI education based on government funding is gaining attention as an alternative to lowering the entry barrier for non-majors. UX/UI design boot camps are one of the fields where demand is rapidly increasing within the Ministry of Employment and Labor’s K-Digital Training (KDT) program.
As a representative example, Team Sparta operates a UX/UI design boot camp through KDT's 'Sparta Tomorrow Learning Camp' so that even those who are trying it for the first time can build practical skills. The 12-week course includes not only basic design and tool education, but also user research, journey map writing, UI structure analysis and design, and HTML/CSS-based publishing practice. In the final stage, the project is completed by directly implementing an MVP-level service.
The curriculum consists of elements that increase immersion, such as a learning routine that proceeds from daily goal setting >> execution >> reflection, team projects, and blog reflections focused on summarizing achievements.
In addition, it supports the effectiveness of the curriculum by ensuring that it goes beyond simply completing education and leads to actual employment. In fact, all track graduates, including Team Sparta's UX/UI design boot camp, are provided with internship opportunities with companies. As of the second half of 2024, the rate of proposals for conversion to regular employment is approximately 31.4%, drawing attention as a structure that allows graduates to settle into employment based on practical experience.
As the number of graduates who have been linked to employment increases, expectations and satisfaction with the course are also high. In a survey of students who attended Team Sparta UX/UI Design Bootcamp, ‘a course where you can experience practical work’ and ‘a program that supports employment linkage’ were cited as key reasons for taking the course. The curriculum, which goes beyond simple lectures and focuses on on-site project-based practice and close feedback, is increasing reliability.
Lee Beom-gyu, CEO of Team Sparta, said, “The core of the program is that it is designed so that students can check their career path and job suitability by experiencing the actual work from beginning to end, rather than simply filling out a portfolio,” and added, “We will continue to advance the curriculum so that career changers from various backgrounds can develop practical capabilities.”
