Thomson Reuters Asia Regional General Manager Bang Yeong-seon: “AI is a trust foundation that connects businesses beyond technology”
Thomson Reuters Asia and Emerging Markets Business Development Director, Bang Yeong-seon, delivered a keynote speech titled “AI Landscape, Thomson Reuters Vision for 2025,” sharing the current status of AI adoption in the global legal industry and Thomson Reuters’ strategic vision.
▲ Three axes of change that are changing the legal industry: regulation, technology, speed and scale
CEO Bang Yeong-seon introduced three key factors that drive the rapidly changing professional environment: regulation, technology, speed, and scale. CEO Bang Yeong-seon emphasized, “Regulation is the essence of the legal industry and the foundation of work. Technology is a tool used to execute complex work, and speed and scale reflect the reality that professionals must respond to changes more quickly. As these three factors combine, the importance of technology and talent that can respond quickly to laws and regulations is greater than ever.”
▲ AI Perception Change – “Expectations in 2023 → Experiments in 2024 → Crisis without introduction in 2025”
The legal industry’s perception of AI technology is also changing. CEO Bang Yeong-seon diagnosed, “In 2023, expectations for AI were the focus, but in 2024, actual use began in earnest, and now in 2025, there is a sense of crisis that if we do not adopt AI, we may fall behind.”
In fact, according to a Thomson Reuters survey, 80% of professionals in Asia and emerging markets responded that AI will have a positive impact on their work, and 78% of global professionals also rate the impact of AI as very high. However, at the same time, 37% of professionals are concerned that the actual adoption speed of AI is still too slow, so the timing and strategy of technology adoption are emerging as important topics.
▲ AI is not a technology, but a trust-based 'connection infrastructure'… … The key is to resolve the three major concerns
The key to adopting AI technology is not simply building a system, but organic connection across the business and integration of trust-based content. In fact, according to a survey conducted at the 'AEM AI Skill Challenge' workshop with about 200 legal professionals in the Asian region, the three main questions that hinder the adoption of AI technology were the reliability of content, expertise tailored to the company's needs, and integration of technology application: n Is this technology based on trustworthy content? n Are there experts who understand and communicate our complex legal requirements? n Is it possible to integrate with the current technology environment?
These questions imply that AI should not be a simple automation technology, but a connected technology infrastructure that should be linked to the expertise of the entire company. Thomson Reuters is strengthening its platform that provides integrated professional content and AI technology, and is focusing its investments and capabilities on AI across the company.
▲ 30 years of AI investment, “Strengthening global technology leadership with the Build-Partner-Buy strategy”
CEO Bang Yeong-seon introduced Thomson Reuters' technology innovation strategy, the 'Build-Partner-Buy' model, and explained in detail the company's core driving system for introducing AI technology. In accordance with the 'Build' strategy, Thomson Reuters is developing its own solutions through more than 2,500 content experts, 4,500 technical personnel, and more than 300 AI engineers and data scientists, and is investing more than $200 million in responsible AI product development every year through the 'Partner' strategy. In addition, under the 'Buy' strategy, it introduced that it has expanded its AI-based technology capabilities through strategic acquisitions worth $1.6 billion in 2024 alone.
CEO Bang Yeong-seon emphasized that the concept of 'innovation' is to start something new and useful. 'Innovation' does not necessarily have to be grand or complicated. What is important is that the small but useful changes you are making now can be the beginning of innovation. "Thomson Reuters will help clients recognize that AI and legal tech are not distant and difficult technologies, and will help them discover opportunities that can create real business value," he said.
