Ministry of SMEs and Startups to Establish ‘Manufacturing AI Center’ in Daegu, Ulsan, and Chungbuk

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups (Minister Oh Young-joo, hereinafter referred to as the Ministry of SMEs and Startups) announced on the 28th that it has finally selected Daegu Metropolitan City (Daegu Techno Park Consortium), Ulsan Metropolitan City (Ulsan Techno Park Consortium), and Chungcheongbuk-do (Chungcheongbuk-do Techno Park Consortium) as the three regions where manufacturing AI centers will be established. This selection was promoted as part of a regional specialized manufacturing data activation project to promote manufacturing innovation in each region and increase AI utilization by SMEs.

The Manufacturing AI Center is a base that supports small and medium-sized manufacturing companies to effectively introduce and utilize AI and manufacturing data. It not only helps companies transform into AI (AX) through establishing regional specialized platforms, distributing manufacturing AI solutions tailored to key industries, and operating regional innovation networks, but also plays an important role in strengthening the capabilities of AI solution suppliers.

This selection was made through a comprehensive evaluation of manufacturing data utilization strategy, business management, and performance diffusion potential, following on-site verification and face-to-face evaluation. The three selected centers will receive support of 12 billion won per location (up to 6 billion won from the national budget, and more than 6 billion won from local governments, for 31 months).

Daegu (total project cost 12 billion won) aims to improve competitiveness through the introduction of AI in core industries such as casting, forging, injection, cutting, and processing in the machine element and material parts industry. To this end, it plans to accelerate the AI transformation (AX) of manufacturing in the Daegu region through the establishment of an AI support platform, verification of specialized AI solutions, and operation of a manufacturing AI industry-academia-research cooperation program.

Ulsan (total project cost 12.9 billion won) plans to promote a comprehensive support program including AI conversion solution distribution, AI-related technology development, platform construction, education, and overseas expansion support to build an AI open innovation ecosystem utilizing manufacturing data from the automobile parts industry. After achieving initial results through this, it plans to expand to key local industries such as chemicals and shipbuilding to strengthen the overall competitiveness of the local economy.

Chungbuk (total project cost 12 billion won) plans to establish an integrated support system to foster the convergence bio industry throughout Chungcheongbuk-do, including Cheongju-si, Chungju-si, Eumseong-gun, and Jincheon-gun, with the goal of increasing AI technology acceptance and promoting AI adoption among small and medium-sized manufacturing companies in the province, focusing on the bio, cosmetics, and medical device industries. In particular, it plans to strengthen various technical support such as AI foundation model development and verification, dataset construction, and AI solution verification and certification to solve common problems in the convergence bio industry.

Kwon Soon-jae, the Regional Enterprise Policy Officer, said, “The Manufacturing AI Center will become a key hub and base for fostering specialized areas of manufacturing AI, such as AI-based process optimization, defect prediction, and quality control that reflect the characteristics of the industry, and expanding them nationwide.” He added, “We plan to actively support Daegu, Ulsan, and Chungbuk, which were selected this time, so that they can lead the AI transition (AX) in the machine elements and materials parts, automobile parts, and convergence bio industries, respectively.”
