SBVA invests in M&A specialist firm ‘Liberty Labs’

Liberty Labs announced on the 26th that it had completed a pre-series A (Pre-A) investment of a total of 13 billion won. SBVA (formerly Softbank Ventures) participated as the lead investor in this investment round, and Smilegate Investment, Stonebridge Ventures, and Voyager Ventures joined as new investors. Existing investors Base Ventures and Primer Sage Partners also continued to make follow-up investments, and CEO Jeong personally invested an additional 3 billion won, and employees also participated voluntarily.

Liberty Labs is a specialized M&A company that aims for sustainable growth of domestic small and medium-sized enterprises. It is benchmarking cases of long-term holding and operational innovation of global companies such as Danaher, Constellation Software, and Japan's Technology Succession Organization. Since its establishment in 2023, it has been operating a method of acquiring small and medium-sized enterprises that are in management crisis due to inheritance tax burden and lack of successors, while maintaining the independence and uniqueness of each company and building a long-term growth foundation.

Unlike typical private equity funds, Liberty Labs does not sell acquired companies but holds them for the long term, pursuing sustainable growth and stabilizing the local industrial ecosystem. After the acquisition, it supports digital transformation and operational efficiency of key internal functions such as finance and human resources, thereby strengthening corporate competitiveness.

According to the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and Statistics Korea, domestic small and medium-sized enterprises account for 99% of all companies and 81% of employment, but 52.6% are at risk of going out of business due to the absence of a successor. Liberty Labs has acquired two companies so far and plans to acquire four more small and medium-sized enterprises within this year.

CEO Jae-Moon Jeong said, “Liberty Labs’ core strategy is to create sustainable companies through efficient capital allocation and a long-term perspective, with the goal of advancing the capital market.”
