MPAGE begins joint research with KAIST MACLab

Development of AI-based music score system tailored to the performer’s skill level

– Expected to contribute to expanding accessibility to music education and improving performer skills

MPAG, a global digital sheet music trading platform operator, has signed a joint research agreement with KAIST’s MACLab (Music and Audio Computing Lab) to conduct research on an ‘AI sheet music system based on performance difficulty.’

Through this joint research, MPAGE and KAIST MACLab will focus on developing algorithms and analyzing data to predict the difficulty of piano performance based on their respective expertise, and plan to build a system that adjusts the difficulty level according to the player's skill level.

MACLab is a music and audio computing laboratory led by Professor Nam Joo-han of the KAIST Graduate School of Culture Technology, and has been conducting various music artificial intelligence (AI) research related to ▲music information retrieval ▲audio signal processing ▲music performance and generation.

Providing sheet music appropriate to an individual’s level when practicing an instrument is a key element in improving performance skills. MPAGE and MACLab will use AI technology to automatically analyze the difficulty of sheet music, increase accessibility to music education, and provide practical help in improving performers’ skills.

In particular, the plan is to implement a highly complete technology by applying the 'tokenization' technology, which breaks down and digitizes the musical score into note units, and precisely reflecting the arrangement of notes according to the difficulty of the musical score, the complexity of the rhythm, and technical requirements.

“The research we conducted with MACLabs will open up new possibilities for technological convergence,” said MPI CEO Jeong In-seo. “Through this joint research, we plan to further strengthen our AI technology and provide innovative value in the global digital sheet music industry.”

Meanwhile, MPIZ operates 'My Music Sheet', 'The Pianist of the Heart', and 'Kokoro and Musician', a global digital sheet music trading platform that connects music creators and users around the world. It was finally selected for Post Tips by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups in recognition of its achievements in AI technology, including its operation of its own corporate research institute.
