IL Oh Seong-ho, CTO, receives commendation from the Minister of Science and ICT

IL, a company specializing in optical lenses, announced on the 12th that its Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Oh Seong-ho received the Minister of Science and ICT Award at the Minister's Award Ceremony held to commemorate the 58th Science Day.

This award is part of the government science and technology promotion award hosted by the Korea Industrial Technology Promotion Association and awarded by the Ministry of Science and ICT, and is given to individuals who have achieved outstanding results in the field of technology research and development. This is CTO Oh’s second time receiving the award, having previously won the same award in 2020.

According to IL, CTO Oh was highly evaluated for expanding the scope of application of optical components from the existing lighting market to automotive lamps, medical devices, and railways through the development of the original technology for silicon optical lenses. He played a key role in IL developing the world’s first silicon lens for LED lighting in 2015, and was recognized for his contribution to strengthening national technological competitiveness and opening up new markets by expanding the scope of technology application to various industrial fields based on this.

The silicone lens that IEL successfully commercialized has a high light transmittance of over 99%, and is characterized by being lightweight and having excellent shape stability compared to plastic, acrylic, and glass lenses. In addition, it is produced using the ‘dispensing’ method without mold production, which shortens the manufacturing period by over 75% compared to the existing method, and reduces production costs by over 90%.

The technology is being applied to a variety of fields, including housing, commerce, transportation infrastructure, displays, IT devices, healthcare, and smart farms. Recently, it has also been successfully applied to some car models in the automobile lamp field, entering the market.

CTO Oh Seong-ho said in his acceptance speech, “Silicone lenses are a material that can be applied to all fields that require light,” and added, “Through continuous research and development, we will increase the industrial usability of the technology and contribute to enhancing the technological competitiveness of Korean industries.”
