George Mason University Korea Campus announced on the 8th that it signed a 'Business Agreement for Global Cation Activation and Exchange' with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and Jeju National University at Baekrok Hall in the Jeju Provincial Office. 'Learncation' is a combination of 'learning' and 'vacation', and is a concept of enjoying learning and relaxation at the same time while traveling. As interest in in-depth travel through learning and cultural experiences has increased among travelers recently, learncation is becoming a trend that provides an opportunity to learn and experience the unique culture and customs of a region beyond simple tourism.
Through this agreement, the three institutions plan to actively cooperate in ▲ joint operation of global runcation education programs ▲ collaborative programs that share Jeju’s values, vision, and future. The first runcation program will be presented at the summer semester held at Jeju National University from July 15 to 28. This program is hosted by George Mason University Korea Campus, and the University of Utah and Stony Brook University also participate.
The program consists of various contents such as Korean language education program, Jeju culture and history experience, Jeju World Natural Heritage exploration, etc. In particular, experiential learning based on Jeju's unique culture and natural environment is expected to provide participants with a deep understanding of Jeju and opportunities for exchange.
Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Governor Oh Young-hoon said, “Global Runcation is Jeju’s new brand strategy that combines academics, healing, and education,” and added, “In the future, we will leap forward as a ‘global K-education and research runcation platform’ through various programs linked to the space industry, green energy, bio, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital fields.”
Joshua Park, the head of George Mason University Korea Campus, said, “This runcation program will provide an opportunity for global students to experience Jeju’s natural environment and culture firsthand,” and emphasized, “In the future, George Mason University Korea Campus will strengthen its functions as a K-culture hub and public diplomacy organization so that students can grow substantially through various experiences in Korean culture, language, and life.” He added, “We will continue to expand our contact points with domestic industries and culture, and fulfill our role as a trustworthy global bridgehead through research and educational cooperation with domestic local governments, various companies, and universities.”
