BHI announced on the 9th that the executives of ThorCon International, a promising nuclear power development company for the 4th generation small modular reactor (SMR) in the U.S., recently visited the headquarters and manufacturing plant located in Haman-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, and discussed cooperation plans between the companies.
Torcon is a company developing an SMR based on Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) technology, and is receiving a lot of attention in the global market, to the point that even Chris Anderson, the CEO of the world-famous lecture program TED, decided to invest in the company. In particular, Thorcon's TMSR (ThorCon Molten Salt Reactor), which uses thorium as fuel, is attracting attention as a next-generation nuclear power technology in terms of safety and economic feasibility.
Torcon is also considered a leader in the field of 'offshore nuclear power plants'. Offshore nuclear power plants are similar to shipbuilding in that the reactors are manufactured in module form at a shipyard and then transported and installed to the construction site via barges. This can drastically shorten the nuclear power plant construction period and also has a cost-saving effect.
With its various advantages, the offshore nuclear power industry is rapidly emerging as a blue ocean industry with high growth potential, being selected as a ‘future food source’ not only by the nuclear power industry but also by the shipbuilding industry.
Torcon is currently actively developing its business in Southeast Asia, and is currently working with the Indonesian government to build a 500MWe offshore TMSR. If the project is successful, it will be the first nuclear power plant in Indonesia.
A BHI official said, “We are very honored to have the opportunity to meet with Torcon, which has unrivaled competitiveness among the various SMR types currently under development,” and “Through this meeting, we had in-depth discussions on the possibility of technological and business cooperation.”
He continued, “We will continue to do our best to create meaningful results in the next-generation SMR field by continuing our friendly cooperative relationship with Torcon through this opportunity.” He added, “In the future, BHI will position itself as a key player in the future nuclear power plant market by growing beyond an auxiliary equipment manufacturer to a main equipment manufacturer based on its excellent technological prowess, abundant supply track record, and global competitiveness.”
