Sonics (CEO Hyung-guk Yang) announced on the 24th that it was selected for the '2025 MSS Global Powerhouse 1000+ Project' hosted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups (hereinafter MSS) and the 'Global IP Star Company' hosted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office.
The 'Global Powerhouse 1000+ Project' is a project of the Ministry of SMEs and Startups to discover export SMEs with technological prowess and innovation and foster them as leading export companies. Outstanding companies are selected through fair and strict screening of companies that meet the qualification requirements, and the selected companies are provided with customized support for overall exports and preferential financial benefits.
'Global IP Star Company' is an IP (intellectual property rights)-based export support project promoted by the Korea Invention Promotion Association under the Korean Intellectual Property Office. It aims to select promising companies with export performance or plans to export in 2025 and foster them as IP (intellectual property rights) powerhouses. Selected companies will be provided with comprehensive government support benefits, including support for overseas rightsization (application, OA, registration) costs related to IP (intellectual property rights) for three years, patent and design maps, design and brand development (new and renewal), and non-English brand development.
With its selection as a global powerhouse, Sonics expects that it will accelerate its efforts to secure new overseas foundry customers, expand its export market, and strengthen its global partnerships. In addition, it announced that it plans to strengthen its portfolio of overseas rights acquisition, protection, and avoidance strategies for its foundry technology along with its selection as a global IP star company, thereby enhancing its IP competitiveness in the global market.
A company official said, “This selection as a ‘Global Powerhouse’ and ‘Global IP Star Company’ proves that Sonics has the potential to grow into a key player in the global 6-inch specialized foundry market,” adding, “We will expand our presence not only in the existing RF chip foundry market, but also in the new overseas photonics foundry market that we are entering.”
Meanwhile, in January, Sonics signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with a Swiss photonics fabless company for joint technology development and expanded its business area to the photonics foundry sector that will be used in the quantum computer field. Currently, the two companies are actively pursuing photonics technology transfer and joint development of mass production technology.
