Startup growth partner Dcamp (CEO Park Young-hoon) successfully completed 'Dcamp Startup OI Tokyo: Retail DX' on the 10th to support domestic startups hoping to enter the Japanese market, confirming the possibility of cooperation between Korean startups and major Japanese companies.
This event was planned to provide opportunities for Korean startups to collaborate with major Japanese companies in line with the trend of active growth in the Japanese CVC (corporate venture capital) market. Japan’s leading telecommunications company KDDI and large convenience store chain Lawson participated as partner companies and actively explored possibilities for collaboration with Korean startups in the retail DX sector.
In particular, discussions were held on a collaborative partnership with KDDI to secure marketing information by linking Lawson's retail data, starting with proposals from startups related to service modules that Lawson needs.
This year's 'D.Camp Startup OI Tokyo: Retail DX' was held in a format that matched suitable collaborative startups for solutions deemed essential in the retail industry.
Prior to this, Decamp selected nine startups hoping to enter the Japanese market. It shared with these startups the Japanese retail DX trends, successful cases of collaboration between large corporations and startups, future technology strategies for the Japanese convenience store industry, and digital innovation cases, and supported the establishment of a foundation for local advancement.
In addition, by closely analyzing each company's business status and challenges and providing customized mentoring, we increased understanding of the Japanese market and supported the advancement of products and services.
The nine startups also attended the 'Private Pitching Event' held at the KDDI office in Shibuya, Japan on the 10th. The event was held with the purpose of examining the startups' business viability, building a sales network, and exploring collaboration possibilities through practical connections with local companies, CVCs, and institutional networks.
A KDDI official said, “Through this event, we were able to confirm that the cutting-edge technology of Korean startups has a high affinity for the Japanese market,” and added that they will continue to review various possibilities in the future. A Lawson official also said, “Through the technology of Korean startups, we were able to gain new insights in the retail DX field, such as energy conservation and automation,” and added that they plan to watch with interest for future utilization possibilities.
A Decamp official said, “We are delighted that this ‘DeCamp Startup OI Tokyo: Retail DX’ will provide Korean startups with a practical opportunity to enter the Japanese retail market,” adding, “We will continue to expand the global growth potential of startups through collaboration with major Japanese companies.”
Meanwhile, dCamp plans to run two more 'dCamp startup OI Tokyo' programs this year. In September, it will select Korean startups in the entertainment field with TBS Innovation Partners, a CVC under the Japanese broadcaster TBS, and in November, it will select Korean startups in the fintech field with Finolab, a Japanese fintech startup hub, and provide local mentoring and business proposal opportunities.
