Handong University and Pohang Joint Technology Holdings Hold Local Startup Design Capstone Project

Pohang United Technology Holdings Co., Ltd., the operator of Handong Global University's Startup Incubation Center, held an orientation (OT) for the 'Local Startup Design Capstone Project' with students from Handong Global University's Department of Content Design and Department of Communication at the Yeonghae-myeon Office in Yeongdeok-gun on the 12th and began the full-scale project.

This project is being promoted as part of the 'Startup Startup Relocation Activation Support Project' to revitalize youth entrepreneurship in the Yeonghae-myeon area, and was planned as one of the Yeongdeok-gun Yeonghae Neighboring Village Expansion Projects. This project aims to encourage young entrepreneurs to settle in the area and revitalize startups utilizing local resources and culture to revive the stagnant local economy.

In particular, this design capstone project will be carried out for 24 local startup companies established in Yeonghae-myeon, and a total of 22 Handong University students will form teams to produce customized content such as corporate branding, brochure and package production, and promotional video planning. The project will be carried out in stages for approximately 3 months until June, and will produce practical design results based on corporate needs.

On the day of the OT, a project briefing and company introduction were given at the Yeonghae-myeon Office, after which the students toured the village and met directly with representatives of each company to identify the needs of each company and discuss future directions for collaboration.

Kim Jae-hyo, the director of Handong Global Startup Incubation Center and CEO of Pohang United Technology Holdings, said, “This project was a meaningful opportunity for students to practice Handong Global’s slogan, ‘Learn and Give,’ and participate in solving problems of local startups.” He added, “As a global university, Handong Global University has a sense of responsibility for the crisis of regional extinction, and we plan to continue our efforts so that the model of collaboration between local youth and universities can spread in the future.”

Mihye Jo, CEO of Yeonghae-myeon startup LocalJoy, said, “When I started a business in the region, I had a lot of difficulties with content creation and marketing, but the process of thinking about our company’s identity and establishing a branding strategy with students has been a great help,” adding, “I hope there will be more opportunities like this where regions and universities can cooperate.”

Participating student Oh Sa-rang, a student in the Department of Content Design at Handong University, said, “Through this project, I was able to directly face field-oriented problems and think about how to solve them through design.” She continued, “It was meaningful because it was an experience where we thought about the growth of an actual startup company together, rather than a simple assignment, and I was able to put into practice the school’s value of ‘learning and giving.’”
