The Ministry of SMEs and Startups (Minister Oh Young-joo, hereinafter referred to as the Ministry of SMEs and Startups) held a youth intern orientation for 60 youth interns hired in the first half of this year at the Ministry of SMEs and Startups’ Awoolim Hall in Sejong City on the 14th.
The youth internship system has been implemented since 2023 to provide young people with opportunities to gain public service experience and reflect their diverse perspectives in policies. The Ministry of SMEs and Startups has hired 146 youth interns as of last year. This year, it plans to hire a total of 118 people, divided into the first and second half of the year.
A total of 275 people applied for the first round of recruitment of youth interns by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, and 60 people were finally selected after document screening and interviews. They will be assigned to affiliated organizations such as headquarters and regional offices to gain practical administrative experience in policy promotion, statistical collection and analysis, etc. for 3 to 6 months.
In addition, we plan to present novel policies from the perspective of youth through visits to policy sites such as small and medium-sized venture companies and traditional markets, youth policy competitions, and activity essay contests. In particular, this year, we plan to provide more policy experience opportunities and expand networking among youth by linking up with youth organizations such as the 2030 Advisory Group and the SMEs and Startups Government Innovation Avengers.
This orientation provided various information necessary for early adaptation to public service, such as an introduction to the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and guidance on the operation plan for youth interns, and also included a special lecture by a renowned lecturer on communication and leadership under the theme of ‘Awaken the Leader Within Me.’
Minister Oh Young-joo, who visited the orientation site, said, “An internship in public office is not just a simple job and experience, but also a valuable opportunity to participate in the policy decision-making process,” and added, “I hope that you will frequently visit policy sites and present policies for small and medium-sized enterprises and small business owners that reflect the fresh perspectives of young people.”
