Upstage and Amazon Web Services (AWS) today announced the official launch of the 'AI Initiative' to accelerate the adoption of AI in education and public interest. This initiative aims to provide Upstage's AI models and AWS's cloud-based generative AI solutions to public interest organizations such as universities, non-profits, and non-governmental organizations, and thereby spread AI innovation in Korea beyond companies to society as a whole.
Upstage provides its Large Language Model (LLM), ‘Solr’, and OCR (Optical Character Recognition)-based unstructured data formatting solution, ‘Document AI’, as APIs, and AWS provides full support for the usage fees required for the relevant institutions to build generative AI solutions free of charge. Through this, the goal is to promote the introduction of AI in the public service and education sectors and to spread related technologies.
Upstage's 'Solr' model is trained based on AWS infrastructure and AI machine learning service Amazon SageMaker, and is a large language model boasting excellent multilingual capabilities and high efficiency. In particular, 'Solr Pro' (22 billion parameters) provided in this initiative has the ability to maximize GPU efficiency and effectively process complex tasks by utilizing a unique depth expansion scaling (DUS) method.
Universities and non-profit/non-governmental organizations that wish to benefit from this initiative can apply through the official Upstage website, and selected institutions will be able to build generative AI solutions using Solr on AWS from April 8, 2024 to March 31, 2026. In addition, 1:1 mentoring and related education and training will be supported for institutions that lack AI expertise or utilization capabilities.
“AWS is pleased to partner with Upstage on this AI initiative, and we anticipate that it will have a positive social impact on Korean society,” said Jeongwon Yoon, Head of Public Sector at AWS Korea. “Generative AI is emerging as a technology that opens new horizons in education and innovation by developing customized education solutions, predictive analytics based on data, and providing personalized learning experiences.” He added, “Through this collaboration, AWS and Upstage will build an inclusive and efficient ecosystem that will create positive change across Korea.”
“We are excited to be at the forefront of public AI development with AWS,” said Upstage CEO Kim Sung-hoon. “Through this initiative, we expect generative AI technology to bring about meaningful change not only in corporate innovation, but also in non-profit markets such as education and public service.”
