The Next Generation Convergence Technology Research Institute (President Cha Seok-won, hereinafter referred to as the Convergence Technology Research Institute), a joint corporation of Gyeonggi Province and Seoul National University, announced on the 27th that as a result of the 'Project to Enhance International Cooperation in Marine and Fisheries Science and Technology' implemented from 2023 to 2024 with the support of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (Minister Kang Do-hyung), management of the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology Promotion (President Jeon Jae-woo), and organization of the Korea Academy of Maritime Science and Technology (Chairman Jeong Hae-jin), it was selected to participate in the UN Ocean Decade (2021-2030) in the field of marine biology.
The selected project was finally selected after fierce competition and strict evaluation over six months as a large-scale project for sustainable oceans by UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). It is the result of recognition of a scientific approach that faithfully follows the project's purpose for responding to climate change.
The research team at the Yonsei University (Climate and Environmental Change Research Lab, Director Dr. Eunyoung Yoon) plans to conduct international joint research in cooperation with various countries and research institutes, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the University of South Florida (USF), by officially carrying out the detailed project of 'Marine Life 2030,' one of the project's core programs.
The UN Ocean Decade group emphasized that the project will adhere to the principles of open and accessible data management, and that the project will be co-designed in collaboration with policymakers and the ocean science community, with user participation throughout the ocean science value chain, and that the principles for sustainable ocean development will be applied.
President Cha Seok-won of the Yonsei Institute said, “This achievement is the result of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ continuous efforts based on science and technology to respond to marine pollution issues at the international level, and it is also the result of Yonsei Institute’s proactive participation in international scientific cooperation platforms.” He added, “Yonsei Institute’s selection for this project will be an important opportunity to expand global cooperation in our country’s marine research, and we will contribute to establishing ourselves as a leading country in sustainable marine management.”
