Gyeongsangnam-do (Governor Park Wan-soo) announced that it held the first meeting (kickoff meeting) of the 'Open Innovation Council' for open innovation created together by large corporations and startups in the medium conference room of the Gyeongnam Creative Economy Innovation Center at 2:00 PM on the 26th.
Open innovation is an innovation method in which companies do not rely solely on internal capabilities but collaborate with external ideas and technologies to create new added value. It is gaining attention as a key strategy to increase market responsiveness through flexible technology development, proof of concept (PoC), and joint commercialization through collaboration with startups in a rapidly changing industrial environment.
The meeting was attended by a total of 17 people including 13 council members from Gyeongnam Province, Gyeongnam Creative Economy Innovation Center, large and medium-sized enterprises (9 companies), research institutes (2 places), and startups (3 places), and the meeting was held with the following topics: ▲ Presentation of 2024 open innovation promotion results and startup performance cases ▲ 2025 open innovation promotion plan ▲ Collection of opinions from participating organizations, etc.
Through this consultative body, Gyeongnam Province plans to build a collaborative platform that constantly connects large and medium-sized companies and startups in Gyeongnam’s key industrial sectors, such as nuclear power, aerospace, shipbuilding and marine, defense, and machinery, and to produce tangible results, such as sales support, through regular networking and task discovery.
Meanwhile, Gyeongnam Province promoted open innovation between 7 large and medium-sized companies and 31 start-ups last year, supporting the commercialization of excellent technology items of start-ups. This year, it plans to further strengthen the program by expanding the number of participating large and medium-sized companies to 10.
Gyeongnam Province Industry Bureau Director Yoo Myung-hyun said, “Open collaboration and coexistence are the core competitiveness of future industries, and open innovation can be the answer.” He added, “This council will create a win-win structure that can provide startups with opportunities for growth and large and medium-sized companies with opportunities for innovation.”
Gyeongnam Province plans to hold an open innovation meetup event in conjunction with the Global Convergence Startup Festival (GSAT 2025) to be held at the Changwon Convention Center on May 28th and 29th.
