L'Oréal Korea won the Climate Action category at the 'ECCK Sustainability Awards 24-25' hosted by the European Chamber of Commerce in Korea (ECCK) and sponsored by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in recognition of its efforts to reduce greenhouse gases and respond to climate change.
The 'ECCK Sustainability Award' is an award ceremony held by the European Chamber of Commerce in Korea to promote and publicize domestic and international companies' efforts for sustainable growth and carbon neutrality. Based on an evaluation of vision, innovation, investment, and effectiveness for sustainability, award-winning companies are selected in five categories (climate action, circular economy, clean energy, green finance, diversity, equity, and inclusion).
The L'Oréal Group has set specific goals in ▲climate change response ▲sustainable water management ▲biodiversity conservation ▲resource conservation ▲social support, etc. through its 'L'Oréal for the Future' sustainability program and is making multi-faceted efforts to achieve them by 2030. In particular, it was selected in the climate action category in recognition of its efforts and achievements in sustainability in various areas ranging from product formulas and packaging to product transportation, retail displays, and digital advertising.
The L’Oréal Group plans to reduce its direct greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1) and indirect emissions from energy use (Scope 2) by 57% by 2030 compared to 2019, and other indirect emissions (Scope 3) across the company’s value chain by 28%. It has set a target to reduce all emissions by 90% by 2050.
To this end, 65% of the product formulas are made of bio-based, mineral-rich, and circular process-derived raw materials, and 44% of the plastic packaging uses refillable, reusable, recyclable, and compostable packaging. When developing new products, the environmental impact of the product is assessed through the SPOT tool, and the focus is on developing products that apply ‘eco-design.’
In addition, we are working to reduce carbon emissions by reducing the use of air for product transportation and optimizing the transportation routes of logistics delivery vehicles. In addition to utilizing solar panels and LED lighting in domestic business sites, we have been certified to use 100% renewable energy for electricity through the Korean-RE100 system, and the L'Oréal Korea ASEM Tower office and the Seoul branch of 'L'Oréal Academy' have obtained the LEED Gold rating, an eco-friendly building certification system.
L'Oréal Korea is also encouraging the reuse of containers through the expansion of refills in terms of marketing, and is operating an in-store empty bottle collection campaign for seven brands of the L'Oréal LUXE division. It is strengthening collaboration with its partners to evaluate the environmental impact of retail displays and promotional materials, and is introducing tools to measure carbon emissions from digital advertising.
In addition, various brands such as Yves Saint Laurent Beauty, Lancome, Kiehl's, Biotherm, Urban Decay, La Roche-Posay, and L'Oréal Professionnel are operating social contribution campaigns for social support, and are helping vulnerable groups obtain employment opportunities through the 'inclusive sourcing' policy.
In addition, we have formed an in-house committee called 'L'Oréal for the Future' to carry out various sustainable activities, and we hold a 'Green Friday for the Earth' event every month along with education on sustainability.
So Ji-hye, Head of Sustainability at L’Oréal Korea, said, “Sustainability is everyone’s responsibility, and it is a journey of constant change,” adding, “With this award as momentum, we hope to continue to collaborate with various partners to accelerate change and create sustainable beauty that inspires more people.”
