Ministry of SMEs and Startups publishes textbook on ‘Youth Entrepreneurship’

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups (Minister Oh Young-joo, hereinafter referred to as the Ministry of SMEs and Startups) announced on the 3rd that it has published the first ‘Youth Entrepreneurship’ textbook to instill entrepreneurship spirit in young people with the goal of creating a ‘venture and startup powerhouse.’

Unlike the US and Europe, Korea has not had a regular curriculum for cultivating entrepreneurship in young people. However, with the full implementation of the high school credit system this year, entrepreneurship classes can be taught as regular courses that can be recognized as credits. Accordingly, textbooks for entrepreneurship classes have been developed.

The textbook for the entrepreneurship curriculum was selected for the Ministry of Education’s collaborative textbook development project in March 2024, and the research committee (curriculum composition) and writing committee were formed* to complete the textbook development in December of last year. Afterwards, it was approved as an authorized book through the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education’s deliberation on February 7 of this year.

The textbook consists of five areas: 'Understanding Entrepreneurship', 'Problem Discovery and Definition', 'Creative Problem Solving', 'Entrepreneurship Design', and 'Challenge to the World'. The course will be graded as pass or fail through observation, checklist, portfolio, and presentation.

Samgoe High School in Gyeonggi Province, a school that participated in the development of the textbook, adopted the entrepreneurship textbook for the first time in March of this year and is using it in the educational field, and plans to expand it nationwide starting next year. To this end, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups plans to distribute the textbooks free of charge to 360 priority schools, including Bizschool High School, in cooperation with the Korea Institute for Startup & Entrepreneurship Development.

In addition, we will provide teacher training during vacation periods by utilizing textbook writing teachers (5 people) as professional instructors, and develop and distribute supplementary teaching materials and lecture content to support the entrepreneurship education introduced for the first time this year to be conducted in a systematic and practical manner in the future.

Minister Oh Young-joo said, “Youth entrepreneurship education will foster creative problem-solving skills and innovative thinking, laying the foundation for them to grow into innovative leaders of the future society.” He added, “I hope that more schools will actively utilize this textbook so that youth can learn about entrepreneurship and experiment with creative ideas during regular school hours.”
