Google Korea Holds Opening Ceremony for '2025 Digital Responsibility Committee'

Google Korea announced on the 24th that it will hold the opening ceremony of the '2025 Google Korea Digital Responsibility Committee (hereinafter referred to as the Committee)' and begin discussions in earnest on responsible digital innovation and the creation of a sustainable ecosystem.

Since its launch in 2024 as part of efforts to foster a responsible digital ecosystem in Korean society, the committee has discussed key issues in each industry and sought sustainable development through the 'Responsible AI Forum', 'YouTube Open Forum', and 'App Ecosystem Forum', which are expert forums covering core areas of the digital ecosystem, including artificial intelligence (AI), content, and the app/game industry.

This year, the 2nd committee will be attended by 43 experts from various fields such as IT/technology, law, media/content, business, policy, and consumer protection, and will further strengthen cooperation between forums to deepen discussions from more diverse perspectives. In addition, by holding forums linked to various Google Korea initiatives such as YouTube's 'Hold On Campaign' and Google Play's 'Window Program', we plan to derive measures for practicing responsibility suitable for the domestic digital ecosystem from a more integrated perspective. In addition, by expanding exchanges with industry officials and policy makers, we plan to support the results of discussions to lead to actual policies and improvements in the industrial environment.

Among the forums under the committee, the App Ecosystem Forum is led by Professor Cho Chang-hwan of the Department of Journalism and Public Relations at Yonsei University, who serves as the chair, and 14 experts from various fields such as regulation and policy, business, VC and startups, media, psychology, IT and technology will participate. Launched in November 2020 and celebrating its 5th term this year, it plans to cover in-depth topics such as 'cross-platform trends', 'global expansion of K-entertainment apps', and 'app ecosystem innovation using AI technology'. In particular, it plans to strengthen connections with the domestic startup ecosystem while introducing various operating methods such as collaboration with related organizations and inviting global experts and startups to add depth to discussions.

The Responsible AI Forum will be attended by 14 experts from various fields, including Professor Choi Jae-sik of KAIST, who is the chairman, as well as law, policy, IT/technology, startups, and digital responsibility. In the first forum last year, responsible development and utilization methods in line with the AI era were discussed, and this year, the forum plans to cover more in-depth topics. In particular, since the Framework Act on AI was passed at the end of last year, the forum will focus on discussing topics such as ‘high-impact AI’ and ‘AI impact assessment’ related to AI regulations and the Framework Act, while examining the direction of development in terms of regulations and technology, such as ‘AI agents’ and ‘AI robot technology’, and will also in-depth discuss social and ethical issues such as AI and copyright, data privacy, and public interest values.

The YouTube Open Forum is comprised of 15 experts who are actively working in the media and content industries, including Professor Yong-Seok Hwang of the Department of Media Communication at Konkuk University, who is the chairman. Since its launch last year, it has established itself as a place for knowledge exchange that examines changes and major issues in the content industry and seeks desirable development directions from policy, social, and cultural perspectives. This year, the forum plans to discuss the latest trends and key issues in the content industry from various angles, such as the 'creator economy' and 'digital literacy'.

Professor Hwang Yong-seok emphasized, “YouTube is an important distribution channel for social information in Korean society and a key platform that promotes the globalization of K-content,” and “In order to develop it sustainably, it is essential to create a healthy media ecosystem and establish a long-term growth strategy.” He continued, “We will actively seek a desirable direction for development together with YouTube Open Forum members and Google Korea.”

Kim Kyung-hoon, CEO of Google Korea, said, “I am pleased that various experts in Korean society and Google Korea can continue their efforts to create a responsible digital ecosystem through the Digital Responsibility Committee.” He added, “This year, under the motto of ‘Responsible Digital Innovation,’ we will listen more actively to the opinions of experts from various fields and think together about more roles and responsibilities for a healthy digital ecosystem.”
