Hansae Industrial announced that it has joined the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), a global carbon neutrality alliance, and declared that it will strengthen its eco-friendly management.
SBTi is an initiative that provides guidance and methodologies for companies to set greenhouse gas reduction targets based on scientific evidence and strengthen climate response. It was jointly established in 2015 by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Currently, more than 4,000 companies and financial institutions have been verified by SBTi and are working to achieve short-term goals. Through this membership, Hansae will follow the SBTi target declaration process, establish a short-term target plan, and receive approval for greenhouse gas reduction and short-term goals.
Since declaring carbon neutrality in 2023, Hansae Industrial has been making company-wide efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. It has prepared systematic responses through climate scenario analysis with a global environmental consulting firm, and has been practicing carbon neutrality in various ways since 2022, such as ▲installing solar panels ▲purchasing RECs (Renewable Energy Certificates) ▲using biofuels at major overseas garment manufacturing companies.
In particular, it reduced carbon by 4,210 tCO2eq through REC purchases between 2022 and 2023, and reduced carbon emissions by 519 tCO2eq through solar panel installation. In addition, the Vietnamese subsidiary purchased 5,600 RECs from the global renewable energy certification agency 'GCC (The Green Certificate Company)' in 2023, reducing carbon emissions by 2,660 tCO2eq. Hansae Industrial has reduced unnecessary carbon emissions and energy use by digitizing its production process through its self-developed smart factory system 'HAMS (Hansae Advanced Management System)', and has also significantly reduced waste by introducing automated facilities.
Kim Ik-hwan, Vice Chairman of Hanwha Securities, said, “By joining SBTi, we have further solidified our eco-friendly management policy, and once we receive SBTi approval in the future, we will actively work to reduce greenhouse gases and achieve short-term goals,” adding, “We will strengthen international trust as a global fashion ODM company that contributes to a sustainable future.”
