Ministry of SMEs and Startups, 1st round of recruitment for companies participating in 'SME CBAM response infrastructure construction'

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups (Minister Oh Young-joo, hereinafter referred to as the Ministry of SMEs and Startups) announced that it will recruit companies to participate in the '25-year 'SME CBAM Response Infrastructure Construction' support project for the first time from February 21 to March 21.

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is a system that will be fully implemented from 2026 after a pilot period from October 2023 to December 2025. Currently, EU exporting SMEs are required to measure the amount of carbon emitted when producing carbon-intensive products such as steel and aluminum and report it to EU importers. From 2026, third-party verification of emission measurements and the obligation to purchase and submit certificates corresponding to the amount of emissions will be added.

Accordingly, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups established the 'Establishment of Infrastructure for CBAM Response for SMEs' project in 2024 to reduce the burden of CBAM response for SMEs exporting to the EU, and this year, in preparation for full implementation (2026~), the support target was significantly expanded (from 110 companies to 185 companies).

Through this project, small and medium-sized enterprises that directly or indirectly export the six items subject to CBAM to the EU can receive on-site, customized consulting from experts on measuring carbon emissions per product and reporting emissions to EU importers.

In addition, the accuracy of emission measurements is guaranteed by EU-accredited verification agencies reviewing carbon emissions calculation results for each product and issuing a final verification opinion.

In addition, we plan to strengthen the self-response capacity of SMEs by subdividing the emissions measurement and reporting practice program that has been in operation since 2024 into major direct and indirect export product groups of SMEs subject to EU CBAM, such as bolts and nuts.
