
Non-profit organization Root Impact announced on the 19th that it successfully completed the 'AI Career School Hackathon' to strengthen the AI capabilities of local talent. This hackathon was held for 2 nights and 3 days from the 12th to the 14th at the YBM Training Center in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, and around 70 young people attending universities in Gangwon, Gyeongsang, Jeolla, and Chungcheong regions participated, forming 12 teams.
This event, run by IT and entrepreneurship education company Dandy Lion, was held for non-metropolitan youth to bridge the educational gap between regions. It provided project experience and networking opportunities using AI technology, supporting the growth of local talents who have difficulty gaining practical experience compared to those in the metropolitan area.
The theme of the hackathon was 'Developing solutions for local community development', and participants were selected by job titles such as PM, front-end development, back-end development, and design, and formed teams to develop AI solutions to improve local infrastructure or develop local industries and businesses.
The event consisted of ▲orientation ▲AI utilization special lecture and workshop ▲mentoring and development ▲user interview workshop ▲sprint ▲final presentation and award ceremony to enable participants to build practical capabilities and communicate with experts. In particular, this hackathon was characterized by providing specific feedback in terms of technology implementation by supporting customized mentoring for each team to strengthen AI capabilities.
In the final presentation, after three days of intense discussion, several projects with both creativity and practicality were introduced, and the grand prize went to the 'Unhae' team, which developed an application that manages a series of processes from the moment crops sprout to harvest using AI. The Unhae team consists of six current and former students from Yonsei University Mirae Campus, Sangmyung University Cheonan Campus, Pusan National University, Hanbat National University, and Namseoul University, and completed the project by utilizing their expertise in each field, including PM, backend, frontend, and design.
The grand prize and excellence award went to the '10 million won' team and the 'safety seaweed' team. They developed a job platform for foreign workers and an abnormal noise detection service for industrial safety, respectively, and received high praise from the judges.
Root Impact CEO Jaehyung Heo said, “This is a very meaningful event in that it showed the ability of non-metropolitan talents to solve local community problems by utilizing AI,” and added, “We will continue to provide support so that local talents can grow through technology.”
Like the handsome lion, CEO Na Sung-young also said, “It was impressive that the participants were able to focus and produce excellent results in a short period of time,” and “I hope that the talents who gained practical experience through this hackathon will achieve even greater growth by utilizing AI and digital technologies in the future.”
Meanwhile, this hackathon was held as part of the 'AI Career School' sponsored by Google.org and run by Root Impact from July 2024. The AI Career School aims to foster non-metropolitan talents with AI technology to resolve regional gaps and alleviate emotional alienation and economic burden. To this end, it supports customized AI education and employment/startup based on collaboration with universities and specialized educational institutions located in Gangwon, Gwangju, Daegu, Daejeon, Busan, and Ulsan.
