Ministry of SMEs and Startups Holds Meeting to Support Technology Commercialization of Deep Tech Startups

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups (Minister Oh Young-joo, hereinafter referred to as the Ministry of SMEs and Startups) announced that on the 17th, it held a meeting at the Haedong Information Hall of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) with the participation of startups in the fields of robotics, bio (new drugs), space and aviation, and leading organizations such as the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, and discussed plans to promote technology commercialization, presentations of best practices, and support policies.

Many deep tech startups develop innovative technologies, but it is difficult to overcome the gap between R&D and market demands during the commercialization process. Therefore, technology commercialization is very important to support new technologies so that they can be implemented as actual products and services and utilized in the market.

Accordingly, this meeting was organized to discuss ways to support the commercialization of technology so that ultra-gap deep-tech startups can develop creative ideas into new technologies, create new markets, and innovate existing industries to achieve economic and social outcomes, together with government-funded research institutes and other ultra-gap-led organizations that support the commercialization of technology.

The main organizations in the robotics, bio, and space and aviation sectors announced plans to support commercialization of ultra-gap startup technologies by utilizing their infrastructure, including recent technology trends, human resources, research equipment, and global networks. This was followed by presentations of successful cases of commercialization of technologies by ultra-gap startups in each sector, and the meeting concluded with discussions on ways to improve technology commercialization support policies and responses to difficulties and suggestions.

After the meeting, Minister Oh Young-joo toured the robotics research lab, including the Advanced Manufacturing Intelligence Innovation Center Test Bed at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and discussed ways to commercialize new robotics technologies with researchers there.

Minister Oh Young-joo said, “The deep tech field is developing very quickly and the market is continuously expanding, so commercialization support is essential to secure a lead in the global market.” He added, “We will actively pursue relevant policies so that deep tech startups can quickly commercialize their technologies by utilizing the infrastructure and original technologies of government-funded research institutes.”
