Global transportation solutions company Estrafic announced on the 13th that it signed a contract with the Gwangju Metropolitan City Subway Headquarters for the purchase and installation of the first phase of the Gwangju Subway Line 2 station automation equipment worth approximately 13 billion won.
This Gwangju Urban Railway Line 2 project is a project to install station automation equipment at 20 stations along a 17km section. Unlike the existing Line 1, this project is expected to provide a convenient public transportation system for Gwangju citizens along with the G-pass card that has been implemented since January 25. Starting from Gwangju Metropolitan City Hall, station automation equipment will be installed at 20 stations along a 17km section, including Sangmu Station, Geumho District, World Cup Stadium, Baekun Square, Namgwangju Station, and Chosun University to Gwangju Station. The goal is to open at the end of 2026 by establishing a plan for test operation and testing, post-installation technical support and maintenance, and establishing a post-management system.
The Gwangju Urban Railway Line 2 Phase 1 construction project is expected to contribute to the revitalization of the local economy by improving the operational efficiency of the station automation system and reducing operating costs by manufacturing high-quality and stable station facilities, with 15 out of 20 stations being unmanned stations using Estrafic’s latest remote control technology.
In particular, the transfer between Gwangju Subway Lines 1 and 2 allows the use of existing tickets at the automatic ticket gates on Line 2 without the construction of separate physical station facilities, which reduces the cost of future physical replacement and structural improvement of the Line 1 station automation facilities, and ensures the continuous use of disposable tickets. This is a major feature of the design.
An Estrafic official said, “With this contract for Phase 1 of Gwangju Subway Line 2, we have increased the possibility of winning contracts for Phases 2 and 3 of Gwangju Subway Line 2, which are scheduled to open in the future,” adding, “We expect to continue to expand our domestic transportation solution supply together with our US AFC project, and to maintain stable growth both domestically and internationally.”
He added, “Based on our experience as a total solution provider for the Gwangju Metropolitan Subway, we have established a foundation for supplying station equipment and computer systems to the U.S. market.”
Meanwhile, the second phase of Gwangju Subway Line 2 includes a total of 20 km from Gwangju Station to Chonnam National University, Ilgok District, Bonchon Industrial Complex, Cheomdan District, Suwan District, Unnam District, and City Hall, and is scheduled to open by 2029. The third phase includes a total of 4.8 km from Baekun Square to Daegwang Girls' High School, Jinwol Elementary School, Gwangju University, Songam Industrial Complex, and Hyochon Station.
