MeTech Holdings (CEO Chan-Mok Park), a startup specializing in livestock methane gas research, announced on the 7th that it has signed a contract worth USD 1.85 million (KRW 2.7 billion) with JMB North America (CEO John Balbian), a U.S. livestock ICT company. This contract will be carried out through a ‘low-carbon project’ utilizing the methane capsule developed by MeTech.
Metec and JMB North America, in collaboration with the William H. Minor Agricultural Research Institute in New York, USA, will launch the ‘Low Carbon Project’ using methane capsules for dairy cows in New York. The project aims to produce low-carbon certified milk and is expected to make a significant contribution to the sustainable development of the global dairy industry in the future.
JMB North America is a livestock convergence ICT company that has built a healthcare system that manages over 200,000 dairy cows. It was founded by John Balbian, a Cornell University graduate. William H. Minor Agricultural Research Institute is a nonprofit agricultural research institute with an 8,600-acre farm in Chazy, New York, and was founded in 1951.
“We are very pleased that the methane capsules developed by Metec are being utilized in the low-carbon dairy product project that we are conducting with JMB North America and Minor Agricultural Research Institute in the U.S.,” said Chan-Mok Park, CEO of Metec. “This project is very symbolic because it is being conducted in the U.S., and through this, we have secured a bridgehead for advancing into the global market.”
Metec has developed a 'methane capsule', a device that can measure methane gas (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) generated inside the stomach of cattle. In addition, it has successfully developed a methane reduction capsule that provides data necessary for low-carbon certification by applying methane gas reduction technology. Metec is currently exporting methane capsules for measuring livestock methane gas to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
“Low-carbon dairy data will play a key role in establishing a standard for the ‘Scope 3’ carbon credit business for dairy companies around the world,” said Park. “We plan to establish a low-carbon certification center in Singapore and open a carbon credit platform within this year.”
